Apple Pay interferes with boarding card readers at airports

When I am placing my phone on/under a reader at airports (security checks, gates or tax free) to scan my QR logo (boarding pass), the NFC reader on those machines triggers Apple Pay on my phone because it thinks I want to pay for something. So my boarding pass disappears and I can’t let it be scanned. Airport staff says this has become a common problem. Anyone know of a quick way not to let Apple Pay be triggered temporarily?

I have two thoughts, one would work for sure.

  • Try invoking Apple Pay before getting to the where you need to scan your code and select the boarding pass from there rather than through your Wallet. I don't know if this would work but maybe since you've already authenticated Apple Pay it may not bring the screen up again.
  • The one that would work for sure is to take a screenshot of your boarding QR code and just pull it up in photos.
