My option to toggle show read receipts is gone for iPhone messages. How can I recover it?

Today I discovered that my ability to toggle show read receipts is gone from my settings for iphone’s messages. Is there any way I can recover this option? I have a iPhone 7 Plus with OS 12.01

Hello Curiocity,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that the Send Read Receipts option is missing on your iPhone 7 Plus under Settings > Messages. You've come to the right place for help.

I would like to start by having you open a conversation thread and tap the name of a contact at the top of the conversation. Then tap User uploaded file to view conversation details and check if you have the option to turn on Send Read Receipts for that contact on that screen.

If the option is missing from that screen as well, force quit the Messages app and restart your iPhone:

Keep us posted on the results.

Cheers!

I don't believe the option to turn on Read Receipts will appear if you do not have iMessage activated. I'm still searching to see if that is correct, but for now I believe that is the reason.

EDIT: I found this on a PC Magazine website while searching.

The process for enabling and disabling read receipts is the same on an iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Read receipts are not available for all types of messages, though. Apple iMessage-enabled texts are supported, but straight SMS messages are not. You can tell the difference by color. Your iMessage-enabled texts appear in blue, while SMS messages appear in green. Group messages don't support read receipts either.
