FireVault won't stop encrypting my new MacBook

I bought a 13-inch MacBook Air yesterday and I accidentally turned on FileVault encryption while setting up the computer. I didn't know what it was. My bad.

FileVault is stuck at 17% and there's no way I can stop it. It says it's going to take several days to complete.

My Mac is brand new so there's no way there's enough data for FireVault to take that long.

I urgently need a solution so that it lets me install Mac OS Mojave because I'm having problems with iMessage and FaceTime on High Sierra.

By the way, the closest Apple Store is more than 50km away from me so getting a Genius appointment which may cost me money is not a valid solution for me, sorry.

I bought this MacBook yesterday and I'm really upset so far.

MacBook Air, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

Hi halvardlar,

Thanks for the post in Apple Support Communities. I see your FileVault encryption appears to be paused.

As you mentioned, there's not a way to stop the FileVault encryption, but you can turn it off once it's complete. Regarding the encryption pausing, check out the information below from the article Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac :
Encryption occurs in the background as you use your Mac, and only while your Mac is awake and plugged in to AC power. You can check progress in the FileVault section of Security & Privacy preferences.

If you've verified that your Mac is awake and connected to power and it still hasn't progressed, your best bet will be to use this link to Contact Apple Support for further assistance.

I hope this helps so you can get started with your new Mac.

Kindest regards.
