how suppress clips in iMovie

How can I suppress definitively - not just hide or ignore - clips in iMovie 10?

Hi,

iMovie has non-destructive editing. So one cannot permanently delete a portion of a clip. The entire clip always remains even though you make a portion of it invisable by trimming it or splitting off a segment and deleting it. You can always expand out the remaing piece to its full length.

As you mentioned, you can use QuickTime Player to trim the unwanted portion of a clip, share the trimmed clip to your desktop, and then import the shared clip into iMovie. That would permanently remove the trimmed portion of the clip.

Another way would be to import your clip into a new project in iMovie, trim the clip, share out the project to your desk top, and then import the shared clip back into iMovie.

Thanks for taking time to pick up my query and my apologies for not having reacted sooner.

I think that I am talking about "deleting", but let me try to explain my question more clearly.

I am editing old family videos that I have digitalised. (Files are typically 30 or 60 minutes long and are mostly in .DV format; the remainder are .MOV files.) I have two separate objectives.

First, I want to "clean up" the digitalised files by "suppressing", i.e., deleting for good and putting in the rubbish bin (or whatever it is called in English) the useless footage (views of my shoes, clips that are very badly lit, unsteady, unflattering…) to save disk space.

Secondly, I will then edit the cleaned up files into iMovie films. This will involve "cutting out" unwanted bits, which will become "rejects", with an orange line under them in the timeline, but which will not be put into the rubbish bin.

My question is: how can I attain my first objective and delete footage definitively from my files?

Perhaps it is not possible in iMovie? Perhaps I should use QuickTime?

I hope I have made myself clear this time!

Thanks in advance for your advice!
