p58-smtp.mail.me.com problems

I am using Mail v12.0 running on Mojave. I am having problems sending emails – not totally, sporadically. I keep getting an error saying that mail can not be sent using p58-smtp.mail.me.com. I can not edit the SMTP server list - there is nothing listed to edit and I can not add any SMTP servers.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Apple's System Status page currently says the following:

iCloud Mail - Resolved Issue

Yesterday, 3:30 PM - 7:37 PM

Some users were affected
Users may have been unable to send iCloud mail.

Despite this, I was still having problems sending, probably because I monkeyed with the outgoing server settings yesterday when it refused to send.

However, I figured out how to undo all that:

1. I pulled everything out of my Apple Mail client's Inbox and saved it On My Mac.

2. I went into my Apple Mail client preferences/accounts/ and made sure the iCloud email account was highlighted in the menu list on the left side of that preferences window, then, I selected the "Server Settings" tab and changed the pulldown menu for the outgoing server to "none."

3. Still in the Apple Mail client preferences window for the iCloud account, I selected the "Account Information" tab and removed the checkmark beside "enable this account."

4. I quit out of the Apple Mail client.

4. I opened System Preferences/iCloud intending to remove the checkmark beside "Mail" but found that it was already unchecked (because, in Step 3, I disabled the account in the Mail client preferences).

5. I rechecked the box beside "Mail" in System Preferences/iCloud, waited a moment, then closed out of System Preferences.

6. I reopened the Apple Mail client and was able to send email using my BLAH[at]mac[dot]com email account.

It's likely that some of those steps were unnecessary, but as I am not savvy enough to know which, I've listed everything I did here in the hope it might help others with the same problem.

For those still having problems sending mail via iCloud server , even after Apple has posted "Problem Resolved" on system status:

I spoke to tech support and the following steps resolved the issue:

1. Sign out of your iCloud account via Apple Menu > System Preferences > iCloud

2. Quit Apple Mail (this step is essential)

3. Restart computer

4. Sign back into iCloud via Apple Menu > System Preferences > iCloud

5. Restart mail and send a message via iCloud server.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Just did online chat w/ Apple. The rep cust. serv. rep said, "I’ve had a lot of issues regarding not being able to send mail. I’ve talked with my colleagues and they have said that there is a server outage with the iCloud mail system. What I would recommend is waiting 24 hours for those outages to resolve... So sorry for this inconvenience but the engineering team is looking in to this!" Said they'll give me a call when it's been resolved.

This has been happening sporadically to me for several days.

It seems that the Apple Mail server no longer likes me.com addresses for sending emails. These days it is an alias for icloud.com so try changing the sender to xxx@icloud.com. This worked for me. I haven't tried the tip of unchecking the account and checking it again (too many emails in the account!).

If this is the case (me.com no longer supported) it will confuse recipients of my emails if I have to start using an icloud address.

I've been having this problem for over a decade, now. Ever since OSX came on the scene.

My only solution to the ever-lengthening list of servers that cannot be used, in that weird pane that only lists SMTP addresses, is to go back to iCloud and start completely over the process of registering accounts and then filling out individual email address forms.

They don't stay that way. Eventually, I have to do it again. The problem is erratic, but with every OS upgrade it recurs. It's the one Apple feature that drives me bananas. And no official word from Apple about how to get over this recurring problem.

So...I'm trying out alternative email clients. I won't tout them here, that's against Apple's rules, but I now have three candidates to replace Apple Mail. Each one has some deficiency or odd behavior v. Apple Mail's usual reliability and ease of use, but if this problem continues, I will at least try out each of these clients as a way to avoid the annoyance.
