p58-smtp.mail.me.com problems

I am using Mail v12.0 running on Mojave. I am having problems sending emails – not totally, sporadically. I keep getting an error saying that mail can not be sent using p58-smtp.mail.me.com. I can not edit the SMTP server list - there is nothing listed to edit and I can not add any SMTP servers.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Apple's System Status page currently says the following:

iCloud Mail - Resolved Issue

Yesterday, 3:30 PM - 7:37 PM

Some users were affected
Users may have been unable to send iCloud mail.

Despite this, I was still having problems sending, probably because I monkeyed with the outgoing server settings yesterday when it refused to send.

However, I figured out how to undo all that:

1. I pulled everything out of my Apple Mail client's Inbox and saved it On My Mac.

2. I went into my Apple Mail client preferences/accounts/ and made sure the iCloud email account was highlighted in the menu list on the left side of that preferences window, then, I selected the "Server Settings" tab and changed the pulldown menu for the outgoing server to "none."

3. Still in the Apple Mail client preferences window for the iCloud account, I selected the "Account Information" tab and removed the checkmark beside "enable this account."

4. I quit out of the Apple Mail client.

4. I opened System Preferences/iCloud intending to remove the checkmark beside "Mail" but found that it was already unchecked (because, in Step 3, I disabled the account in the Mail client preferences).

5. I rechecked the box beside "Mail" in System Preferences/iCloud, waited a moment, then closed out of System Preferences.

6. I reopened the Apple Mail client and was able to send email using my BLAH[at]mac[dot]com email account.

It's likely that some of those steps were unnecessary, but as I am not savvy enough to know which, I've listed everything I did here in the hope it might help others with the same problem.

Email sends find from iCloud.com web client.

However.. when I logged into iCloud to look at mail there, and it said Apple ID Updated Successfully

When I log into to manage my Apple ID, it says Apple ID Updated Successfully

So maybe apple is having Apple ID issues, or messing with it. Or maybe trying to merge apple ids. Which affects email using same addresses?

Note I'm one of those users who have 2 different apple ids... which share the same email address.

name" (from original account, used for iTunes) and "name@mac.com" for iPhone and Macs (as you must have an email for those two).

While you can convert 'name' into an email apple id... you can use the email apple id "name@mac.com" because it's already in use!

Apple can't merge the two IDs, especially because they use the same email address. And I'm not giving up all my email, or all my purchases, by deleting one or the other. As Apple said years ago as a solution.

I'm still having no luck as of 11:30 am EST

Web mail works, but Apple Mail on my Mac will not send via iCloud server.

Other mail accounts work.

Outgoing from iOS works.

The sender address {myemail}@icloud.com was rejected by the server p60-smtp.mail.me.com.

The server response was: Authentication required prior to MAIL/SAML/SEND/SOML

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.

Every time Apple updates their OS, I get some kind of problem like this.

Standard comment from tech support, "Update your system software."

But this is simply not an option when I'm in the middle of a busy work week.
