Why is my mac.com outbound email no longer working?

Hi, I have had four mac.com email aliases in use for about 15 years. Today, my 2017 iMac running Mail on Mojave suddenly stopped allowing mail to be sent from one of my aliases. I received the following message:

The sender address****@mac.com was rejected by the server p72-smtp.mail.me.com

I haven't changed anything, I have deleted iCloud accounts and added back - no change. Apple servers appear to be up.

Only one of the aliases is causing this problem. The others work fine. I've tried restarts etc. nothing changes.

If i click the "edit SMTP Server" button it brings up a window in settings, but there are no SMTP server settings to check. ie. everything is blank. If I click "edit message" and change the outbound address to one of my other aliases, it works.

Any thoughts?

Well, it started for me this morning. I did all the troubleshooting that I recommend here, with no resolve.

I rebooted in safe mode and three emails from my iCloud sent. But back in normal mode, nothing.

I spent an hour with Apple Support via phone. He indicated that there is a problem with iCloud which is affecting outgoing mail that the engineers are working to fix since sometimes yesterday.

FWIW I have an @iCloud.com email address and 2 aliases.

All of us with @mac.com addresses pretty much know we have @icloud addresses. The issue is that we have all used out @mac.com addresses for almost two decades without ANY changes. If we suddenly can't use our @mac.com outgoing or incoming mail servers and are forced to change to one of the @icloud ones, could you imagine the ensuing chaos having to change your email address - one that you've had for all private and professional usage for YEARS? Sorry, just a vent here because I don't think you truly understand our problem here.

Same here. I cannot send emails from my @mac.com alias, but @me.com and @icloud.com aliases work fine. Stupid thing is that I have used my @mac.com alias for business for 17 years now and changing it would be a *real* hassle. Thankfully receiving emails is not a problem. I have been in touch with Apple about the issue but so far no success. Will keep at it and if solution presents itself I shall post it here.

Thank you - I'll do the same! Methinks it's affecting only us "oldies" - those of us with an Apple @mac.com email address when they first supplied an email server back in the *very* early 2000s. I remember the furore when they came up with the @icloud, @me addresses and I (and many other people) said YUCKO! Let us keep our @mac.com one, and they let us. I hope this isn't a sly way of forcing us to give up that address. Oh, the hassle and chaos that will ensue for us!!!

Same here - exact same problem is on my iPhone as well.

I've also noticed that when trying to compose an email, I don't have the choice to pick any of my other @mac, @icloud, or @me addresses in the "from" field, only the @mac one I'm having trouble sending from. This happens from both the Mail app as well as from iCloud online as well. Exact same issue. Exact same problem.

I am having the same issue except I am trying to send from my @me.com address. I am now having the issue on my phone and my Mac.

I have had the error on my Mac for about 10 days and just this morning (10/30/18) I am getting the error on my iPhone. I have not changed any settings.

The weird thing is it is only happening with outgoing mail, not incoming mail.

It appears that it is starting to slowly work. I just was able to send emails out- and I also sent one to myself and received it. I'm going to restart my mac and devices and see it that helps things along.

I also noticed while the server is down, it seems that two-factor authentication wasn't working. It just worked when I signed in to comment here.
