Is iPod 2nd Gen Shuffle Still Usable?

I just got a new iPod shuffle 2nd Gen from someone in my neighborhood, but iTunes is not registering it, and the Startup Wizard is not initiating when I plug it into my MacBook Pro (currently running OS X El Capitan) for the first time. I called Apple and tried various simple troubleshooting steps (turning my computer on and off, updating iTunes), but was told the 2nd Gen iPod Shuffle is too old to pair with El Capitan, but I wanted to ask the community before I look into getting rid of this iPod. Is there anything that can be done?
