I was thinking that I missed something too.
I started another web search and found this very easy solution!
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7931220
Short:
While having the printing dialog open;
Choose next to Layout, Paper handling, ... Peinter Features!
It’s a scrollable window! :]
The first new visible row is called „duplex printing“ and its set to „OFF“ by default ...
Enjoy.

Yes it is working. I upgraded and have the Canon MP640.
Just download from
PIXMA MP640 - Support - Download drivers, software and manuals - Canon UK
The Driver for OS X 10.11
MP640 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 11.7.1.0 (OS X)
Optional the software:
Canon IJ Network Tool Ver.4.7.1 (Mac)
Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver.4.7.2 (Mac)
Then move to your printer settings and the setup will be ready for you 🙂
Enjoy!
No, I upgraded til Mojave and printer doesn't work anymore. Driver software isn't upgraded yet.
Thank you for a reassuring answer. Using your links, I have downloaded and installed the current drivers.
Now read to go to Mojave.
Everything works for me except for duplex printing. The "Two-sided" option in the Layout section is disabled (greyed out).
Does that work for you? Did you have to do anything particularly?
It is scrollable!
Who would have thought that. I had looked there at least 10 times.
Truly badly designed.
Thank you!
