Imported pictures missing left side only, cannot crop to fit

10.1.9 - iMovie version

After a couple successful imports of png files into my iMovie, future ones (even duplicated files of existing ones) are corrupted on the left side a black border taking up about 1/3 of the image. I can crop to fit, fit, or ken burns it as much as I like once it's in the timeline, but that border is included in my project media.

Of the 2 working images in my media, the first one shows the black border if I hover over it in the media, but is fine in the timeline regardless. The second image is fine regardless of hover or timeline. Any subsequent images added at this point show the black bar regardless of hover in media, and have it in timeline. This is maddening, please help.

In the image below, I am hovering over the left image, resulting in the bar showing for it. The third image always has it.
