What does this Mail symbol mean?

(screen shot below.) The 'lightning bolt arrow' symbol below is showing up next to most, but not all of my mail. It appears next to unread as well as read mail. Does anyone know what this means? What it's called? Thanks in advance for any help with this mystery symbol.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
