How to import iMovie HD 6 and earlier iMovies into iMovie 10

I have several old iMovie files created in iMovie 6 HD and earlier versions of iMovie that I would like to import into iMovie 10 (Mojave). These older files are stored in folders by subject content (not within the Movies folder). I can't manually import the files and iMovie 10 will not see the files and upgrade them to be used in iMovie 10. I also can't import the .mov (Quicktime) files that were created long ago from the iMovie files. Can anyone provide instructions on how to get my old iMovie files into the new version of iMovie?

iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017), macOS Mojave (10.14)

Hi, Fred,

iMovie 10 cannot update iMovie 6 projects. The update feature only reaches back to iMovie 7. If you still have iMovie 6 on your computer, you can share out those projects into movies and drag the movies into iMovie 10. Same for the .mov files that you previously shared out If the movies won't import into iMovie 10, use the free download, Handbrake, to convert the movies to Mp4/AAC (that Handbrake will do by default).

If you do not have iMovie 6 on your computer, and want to access and edit your old iM6 projects, you can download a hacked version, iMovie 6.5.1, here:

Although it is a hacked version, I have read user posts that report it works fine. This was before Mojave, however.

Thank you, Rich. I went back to my iMovie HD (6) files on my older iMac and shared the files as Quicktime/Full Quality .dv files. Quicktime player on my new iMac (Mojave) was able to play these files. I suppose I'll keep my old iMac around because there is so much on that machine that I suspect will have similar problems being used on the new machine, especially when macOS moves to 64-bit only in 2019.
