As I understand, the RAM is socketed in Mac mini 2018.
Let's say I get the 16 GB model, am I limited to using memory chips up to 16 GB?
You can go as high as two 32GB modules for a total of 64GB. But I believe only 16GB memory modules are available at this time. iFixit now has a tutorial up. You have to remove the fan and motherboard but it doesn’t look that bad. I’m going to do it.
The sockets are standard for any 2666MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM memory. 2018 Mac mini supports up to 64 GB, regardless of how much is built in at purchase time. However, there are only two sockets, so if you want to upgrade later, you’ll have to “replace” the existing modules with the higher-capacity ones.
At this time, it is still not entirely clear how easy replacing of RAM will be (the sockets appear to be partially obstructed by the case). You might want to wait until the 2018 models are received and disassembled by iFixIt and others.
The RAM is replaceable. Upgradeable refers to size of RAM, 16 gb as opposed to 32gb or 64gb.
