My text replacement stopped working after the 12.1 update. I could still see my saved phrases in my keyboard settings. Any tips?

I found an answer to the 12.1 or 12.01 or whatever text replacement issue that I upgraded on Nov 12 2018. I think somewhere along the line someone shortened the length of the amount of characters we’re aloud to use. When I went and shortened and in some cases cut my text replacements in half they worked. For example one of my replacements I named ‘zz’= “Hello its Scott from Scooters. On the road but can give you a quick estimate. We are very happy to help😀”. The second part I had to name something different so I named it ‘Zz2’ which says the other half of the original. “Please tell me how many areas you plan on cleaning (bedrooms, hallways, stairs ect,) oh and Whereabouts are you located?” So one ez shortcut became two but works great and I’m back in business. I can text the first shortcut followed by the 2nd all it one text and still send full Text replacement I originally wanted to send. Sooo from the Hello it’s Scott.. to the ...happy to help😄 seems to be just around the max character count for one text replacement. Not sure how many character count that is. I hope apple changes it back but by then I personally wont absolutely need or know if they did. Good luck all business owners especially. Lost some dough myself today. Confidencapple to fix. Looks like with iOS 12.1, text replacement has been limited to 128 characters.
This is really annoying and hopefully apple removes this character count soon, otherwise I will need to double or triple the number of shortcuts since some will require 3 or 4 shortcuts when i previously only needed 1 shortcut.
As someone else pointed out, the workaround currently is to break up your shortcuts into pieces no more than 128 characters long. So instead of aaa for 1 long phrase, you may need aaa + aaa1 + aaa2.. ..
Please fix soon Apple!!!
hi there, I found your question a few minutes ago because I was having the same trouble. I tried deleting one text replacement and it suddenly worked. try it! i just tried it and it just worked and logged in here to share the solution.
Ok found a temp solution. Try another keyword. Works for me. Installed SwiftKey and all my text replacements work again. I still prefer the default keyboard but when I need to use a text replacement, I just activate swiftkey and I’m good.
Just updated iOS ton12.1.1 and its working again
This was fixed in 12.1.2 (16C101)
So last night I tried an “Erase All Contents and Settings” and an iCloud restore with no luck. So I decided to take it a step further and downloaded a copy of iOS 12.0.1 to my computer and did a restore to the prior version of iOS. With the prior iOS on my phone I restored an older iCloud backup (prior to the 12.1 upgrade) and I am now back in business - shortcuts are working again. It is clearly an issue with iOS 12.1.
Just talked with support. Text replacement is a known bug for sure with version 12.1. A fix is being worked on. I wiped my phone and reset, and got it to work with smaller shortcuts, but it doesn't work with long paragraphs of words. I heard they have limit at 126 characters, which would suck. Contact Apple and make sure they know this is important to you!
I ended up downloading Gboard and that allowed me to use my text replacement again without having to break up my messages.
It's important to let Apple know there's a problem. (This is a user-to-user forum, so these messages aren't likely to be seen by the people who can fix it.) Go here: https://apple.com/feedback/ ... and submit this as a bug report. Specify the version of iOS you're using, in case this doesn't appear as one of the choices on the pull-down menu. Provide as much detail as you can.
You can also contact Apple Support for help. Sometimes the support rep can walk you through some steps that will solve the problem.
Having spoken to two really sympathetic Apple Techs ( R...... and D..... ) they have both indicated that the problem lies with texts OVER 120 CHARACTERS..... this appears to be true for me, for sure. All the texts appear on my Text Replacement Lists ( Settings - GENERAL - KEYBOARD - TEXT REPLACEMENT) .... however when i attempt to use them, only the SHORT ones appear and work. All the long ones which have more than 120 characters, do NOT work.
For those of you that use TEXT replacement ( AUTO TEXT on blackberry), you will know what a disaster this upgrade of ios 12.1 has been :-(
I bought a £1000 phone, only to be faced with such a nightmare. I have over 500 Text replacement codes that i use on a daily basis and I am lost without them. I actually left Blackberry when they started to have problems with their software, only to be faced with continual issues with text replacement with Apple. Some of you will remember the issue with text replacement shortcuts that were disappearing on a previous version of ios - though this was EVENTUALLY sorted out by apple eventually.( 18 months to 2 years later !) .... I am praying that they sort it out quickly.
I don't know if this is related, but i also have an issue ( even with ios 11) with Text replacements not working properly when i send a SERIES of text messages in a row.... being in the rental property business, i can easily send off 7 long property details in a text message to client. When i did this i realised that there was a LAG in sending the messages and the text replacement would often NOT WORK - i would have to switch the phone off using the side button a couple of times and then it would work.... its as if there was a RAM or buffer issue ???
Lets hope that enough people highlight this issue so that Apple will prioritise it.
I'm having the same problem... this is my temporary workaround until Apple patches the problem... I simply copy and paste text replacements. So far I've been able to minimize the lost time during my route.
