Unable to login to my MacBook Air

I can't login to my MacBook Air. It powers up but just spins after I enter my acct PW. Any advice?

See if resetting the password helps. If that doesn't do anything, try reinstalling the OS.

Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility and select First Aid. Then re-install the OS.

Hello Eric,

Thank you for responding to my question. I just tried resetting the SMC by holding down left shift, control, option and power for 10ish seconds. Then hit the power button again. It made the start up sound, the Apple logo came on and the progress bar started to move. The progress bar stopped 3/4 of the way and has moved since. Ugh.

Any new suggestions?

How long should I allow it to stay in that state before I shut it down?

Again, thanks for any help you can give.

Barbara
