photos keeps dropping iphone

When I connect the phone to the iMac and bring up photos, photos sees it for a few minutes, loads some photos, stops, loads a lot of grey squares and then bounces the phone off but will do a full load from iPad mini 4

I have rebooted both devices

reset the location/privacy on the phone

tried different cables

plugged the phone directly into the imac

the phone is recognized in iTunes, iExplorer

Image Capture loads most of the photos and then bounces the phone off but will do a full load from iPad mini 4

no photos using the cloud

iPhone XS Max, iOS 12.1, null

OK it is good old apple at work again - having been through MANY online apple people this is the result.

iPhone XS max cannot use the photo app or image capture app with mac running El Capitan, as they are now bundled into the Mojave software. I will have to move up to Sierra or maybe High Sierra or Mojave and see if that works. Mojave is the last one to use the 32 bit programs.

"At our Worldwide Developers Conference in 2018, Apple informed developers that macOS Mojave is the last version of macOS to run 32-bit apps."

However there is a fix if you load Mojave and your CS5 photoshop (a 64 bit version) does not work. Go to system prefs/accessibility/privacy and you will see a list of any program you can 'allow' to run this computer. Click on photoshop and pray.

Now all the old-timers will know that moving up on mac software can KILL your older adobe software and hey, that's just too bad as "you can subscribe to adobe programs now". I paid a LOT for my photoshop, et al and I do NOT want to pay a monthly fee. Very irritating.
