Playing iTunes music on a stereo

I used to be able to play iTunes music on my Mac through my stereo via menu options. But apparently some update removed those options. Is there still a way to do this?

Hello Hazel Greenberg.

You may have been using AirPlay to play music from your Mac through your home stereo. Try these steps to play music with AirPlay:

From your Mac or PC

User uploaded file

  1. Open iTunes and play music.
  2. At the top of the iTunes window, click User uploaded file.
  3. Check the box to the right of the name of a device to play the currently playing audio through that device. If you choose to AirPlay to an Apple TV, you might be asked to enter a passcode.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, Hazel Greenberg.
If I understand your post correctly, you'd like to be able to play music from your Mac through the speaker on your home stereo. I can understand wanting to play music through your desired speakers. I'd like to help.
To use your home stereo to listen to music on your Mac, follow these steps:

Connect your home stereo to a Mac

If you want to digitize your vinyl record, cassette tape collection, or other sound source, you can connect your home stereo to your computer. Then use GarageBand to record the music on your Mac.

You need a USB or FireWire audio interface that has dual RCA inputs. If your Mac has an audio input, you can use a 1/8-inch stereo mini plug.

To record from your home stereo to your Mac, follow these steps:

  1. Attach the RCA connectors to your stereo receiver's auxiliary (aux) output. This might be called "Record" or "Tape Out" on some receivers.
  2. Connect the other end of the cable to the audio input port on your Mac or to your Mac-connected audio interface.
  3. Turn on your home stereo.
  4. Make sure that your stereo is set to output via auxiliary.
  5. Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click Sound.
  6. Choose the Input tab and select your audio interface or the audio line “In."

Let me clarify. In the recent past, I have been able to use menu options in iTunes to send digital music on my Mac to play on my stereo in another room--without any physical connections between the stereo and my computer. This worked perfectly until those menu options disappeared. I cannot remember exactly the names of those options, but I do know that there were several options you choose to play the computer's music through, one of which was the stereo.
