Garageband recording

Garageband not detecting audio for mic or instruments. I tried going into system preferences as well as garageband to change input but was unsuccessful. Input signal is also detected in system preferences, so I think GarageBand is solely not detecting incoming audio. If I could receive help asap I would greatly appreciate it

MacBook Air, iOS 12.1
