Mac mini mid 2011 - worth upgrading?

I currently have a Mac Mini mid 2011 that is super slow. It currently has 2 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive. At this point, is it worth me investing in additional RAM and a larger hard drive? If I do the upgrades, will it still be compatible with a lot of the new software? And running Mohave? If it’s worth it to upgrade, I have two slots. Is 8 Gb (4 per slot) the most I can do or can I put in 16gb (8 per slot). Also what’s the largest hard drive feasible for the mini? Thanks in advance for any insights or recommendations.

Well it's not a question if it you should replace the hard drive, it is failing and needs to be replaced. Make sure to keep good backups, either TIme Machine or a clone.

Even if you want to put the money into a new hard drive and more RAM, it still doesn't meet the specs to run Mojave.

macOS Mojave - Technical Specifications

IMO you'd be better off buying a new Mac, if you can afford it.

You can still get some use out of it by upgrading the RAM and installing a SSD to replace the failing spinning drive. The RAM is easy, but you may want to have an authorized Mac service place swap out the drive for you. You can find how-to videos at OWC (macsales.com). You would want to have the replacement drive ready to go before having it installed in the Mini: it should have an OS already installed before it goes in.

You could run Sierra or High SIerra on it.

If you want to just improve the current mini, I would second what kahjot said. More memory would help a good deal, since 2GB just isn't enough to do much of anything, IMO. And the first thing I did to my 2011 mini when I got it was add memory and swap the slow 5400 rpm HD for a solid state drive. SSD's are MUCH faster.

All that being said, the new 2018 minis are pretty nice! I just got one and sold my 2011 to a friend. I hope that you can get your mini faster so you can enjoy it.

Thank you for taking the time to troubleshoot with me I really appreciate it. Thankfully I already have it doing time machine back up’s, so I’m covered there. At this point I’m trying to decide if I get the new Mac Mini with larger storage 1tb, Or go with the 21.5 inch iMac with the fusion drive. I already have the keyboard mouse, and monitor so then I lean towards staying with the Mac Mini. I don’t know, I just don’t wanna dump money into something that’s still not ever going to be able to handle the neeest OS.

The new Mini looks nice, but make sure that all your software will work with Mojave, because you will be stuck with that. Also, getting the new Mini with 1TB of storage will be very expensive. Apple charges a premium for storage and RAM. You could get a Mini with 512GB of internal storage and add external storage as you need it.
