2018 Mac Mini monitor wake from sleep and power light

I just got my 2018 Mac Mini Wednesday and hooked it up to my LG Ultra 4K monitor via USB C. Works great except:

  1. The monitor won't turn back on when I wake the mini from sleep. The only way I've found to get it on is to unplug the USB C from the back of the monitor and then plug it back in. The mini seems to wake fine (because my Apple Watch says it logged me in to my mini), but the monitor won't come back on. I have not tried another monitor yet...
  2. The power indicator light on the front of the mini stays on solid even when sleeping.

Anyone else having these issues?

Thanks!

Mac mini, macOS Mojave (10.14.1)

SOLVED!!

I had no idea that there was an app for the LG monitor...duh. Installed app and it did a software update and voila...works like it should now!

Yea! 🙂

Read this thread. Just wanted to say as of May 2019 the problem persists. This is when I received my i7 Mac Mini. It "seems" to be more of an LG than a Mac problem.

I have two 27UK600-W 4K LG monitors and one ACER 27" HD. The Acer turns on like a light switch every time I wake the Mini. It is a legacy monitor that I used with my old mid 2011 iMac.

I reached out to LG and a nice lady sent me back instructions on how to uninstall/reinstall drivers for Windows 10.

They have not replied to my reply (as stated in my original service request) that I am using a Mac.

One LG 4K monitor is connected with the LG supplied HDMI cable to my Mac Mini HDMI port. The HD and the other LG 4K are connected using J5Create HDMI/USB C cables.

The ACER never has a problem waking. This would seem to me to point to an LG problem. I would swap out the LGs but the next closest 4K monitors I have seen are between one and two dollars more expensive. I LIKE the LG monitors. But I am seriously thinking about swapping them for two HD monitors. Unless some solution (workable not work around) is found.

I said it was an LG problem. But I have seen other monitors mentioned here. Are they 4K? If so maybe it's a 4K problem?

I do not have another computer system I can use with these monitors so I can't compare wake from sleep responses.

Any updates anyone has would be appreciated. BTW I am going to reach out to LG. Again.

No - I have two non-4K monitors (BENQ G2420HDBL and CMV CT-934D) and neither will wake from sleep. If I remote into the Mac mini and check the display it thinks it has a BUILT-IN display, so no wonder it's not waking the external monitor.

The monitors both connect via USB-C to VGA adapter. One Mac mini is an i7 and the other is an i5.

The only solution is to: (1) disconnect the video cable and then reconnect it - the display wakes but I worry about the number of connector insertions and re-insertions or (2) set the mac mini and display to both never sleep. Hardly satisfactory.

My display is 4K and I have tried everything possible from different cables to different outputs and inputs on the ASUS 32" 4K monitor. The most luck I have had is with a display port to thunderbolt cable and unplugging the power to the display when it won't wake up. Just when I think I have solved the problem, it does it again. It is too intermittent to take in to Apple. The HDMI port is the most unreliable. It is not an LG or ASUS problem. It is a Mac Mini 2018 problem. Apple people say it doesn't happen. It does happen and too often.

And there are even more non-4K HDMI monitors where they work *perfectly*. All “reports” are on the mini only because the monitor manufacturers have poor support, not to mention Apple makes for a fun punching bag. How these faulty monitors cope with older minis is *irrelevant* because none of them have HDMI 2.

Bottom line’s this: as of now this ain’t an Apple problem and no amount of spamming these boards will make it one. All the best anyways.

If the monitors don’t work, it’s a monitor problem. If a person can’t wake their son up instantly, is it that person’s problem or the son’s? None of these monitor manufacturers certify/test their monitors with Apple or say so on their specs, or plan to. They could, of course, add a “small warning” but choose not to (although Dell actually does that on their support forum when it comes to DisplayPort connections).

In other words, the monitor manufacturers don’t give a hoot, don’t even give you a decent platform to complain. At least with Apple you have the latter. Enjoy! It won’t resolve anything, but admittedly, group empathy is a wonderful thing. In the meanwhile, I do hope the problem magically goes away. Best wishes.

Going to have to go with hmibrooklyn as well.

I had one of my monitors (non 4K) attached to an iMac. It worked flawlessly and woke up instantly. It no longer does.

I swear it takes longer for my monitors to wake up than for the Mini to cold start.

It's not an evil time lapse, just noticeable enough to be annoying with new kit.

And I drank the Apple coolaid long before most of you were born. So I am NOT in the habit of Apple bashing.

I comment on empirically experienced behaviors and I reported them without bias or preconceived notions of fault. Just as I would any other observed aberrant behavior. I do this to improve the product not bash it.

FYI,

My kit consists of:

2018 Mac Mini (Purchased April of this year)

64 GB Ram

1 TB SSD

Two LG - 27UK600-W 27" IPS LED 4K UHD

One connected via HDMI/HDMI

One connected via HDMI/USB C

One Acer - 27" LED HD Monitor

Connected via HDMI to USB C

The Acer is the one I was using with the old iMac.

I do not have to unplug mine. The Acer will, on its own, eventually come up. Most times before the 4Ks.

With the iMac, I hit the space bar and both lit up immediately. I may have just been spoiled.

One or the other 4Ks "usually" come online but after the Acer. Sometimes I have to hit the power button on one or the other to "wake" it up.

Great, now it’s meatier. Your iMac doesn’t have TB3, it’s past behavior n/a. It also wasn’t connected to three external monitors. So other than the only takeaway, which is that it points to the dongle you’re using, forget the golden days when everything worked.

I would connect the Acer to HDMI direct and see if it improves its behavior. Of course, that’ll probably get the LG to act up. If it does, look for a better dongle, and if that doesn’t work, blame LG. These are all problems with monitor manufacturers who understand glass better than they do software and tech support. Frustrating, yes, but complain loud enough and one day they are bound to up their game. Or come back and complain here. It won’t solve your problem but at least you’ll get to vent with the others.

All the best.

I had the same issue and solve it in a different way. Maybe my solution will be useful for someone.

To cut the story short, I was able to get back to the MacOS after a deep sleep only by somehow going to the password reset into the OS and by doing then a reboot. After reboot everything was working ok till next sleep. This was annoying.

To solve this I just disable all power saving options from the monitor and let MacOS to handle all the stuff.

By doing this since 3 day's I had no issue.

Monitor: LG 27uk650-w

PC: MacMini i5-256GB SSD Late2018

Thanks.

OK. Here's the deal. After applying this "fix" my situation improved. Some. I have only had to deal with one of the LG monitors. I have 2 LG 4K and one Acer HD - The Acer ALWAYS comes on. One or the other of my LGs (they seem to take turns) has to have the power switch bumped to get it to wake up.

I appreciate that ROROID passed on this clue. As they say in this part of the world " es mejor que nada".

So this topic has been active for >8 months. Where is Apple in this?

Where is the ticket number to track this with?

Where is the communication to the receiving end here (us) that this has even been acknowledged?

Where is the message this has been fixed?

Any professional company would be communicating clearly to their users.....and the jury is out as to whether this is even fixed or not....

Unimpressed. Sigh.
