2018 Mac Mini monitor wake from sleep and power light

I just got my 2018 Mac Mini Wednesday and hooked it up to my LG Ultra 4K monitor via USB C. Works great except:

  1. The monitor won't turn back on when I wake the mini from sleep. The only way I've found to get it on is to unplug the USB C from the back of the monitor and then plug it back in. The mini seems to wake fine (because my Apple Watch says it logged me in to my mini), but the monitor won't come back on. I have not tried another monitor yet...
  2. The power indicator light on the front of the mini stays on solid even when sleeping.

Anyone else having these issues?

Thanks!

Mac mini, macOS Mojave (10.14.1)

SOLVED!!

I had no idea that there was an app for the LG monitor...duh. Installed app and it did a software update and voila...works like it should now!

Yea! 🙂

Any professional company would be communicating clearly to their users.....and the jury is out as to whether this is even fixed or not....

Unimpressed. Sigh.

1) This is a user-to-user support forum. Apple's participation here is minimal. Anyone who wants direct help from Apple should use the Contact Support link at the top right of every page of these forums.

2) The person to whom you're replying resolved their own issue 6 days after they posted here. See the post marked "Solved" at the top of the page. It also turns out it wasn't an Apple issue at all.

Well, three things.

One, for me, it is not "Solved". Better but not solved.

Two, when I did my testing using the fix, it seemed to improve my situation but was not a solution.

Three, I did my testing under Mojave 10.14.6.

I do NOT blame this on Apple. I was just hoping there might be an Apple fix. LG was not helpful or supportive. That's what I get for buying the cheap (relative term) set of 4K monitors.

2018 Mac Mini still has the same issue after MacOS 10.14.6 (18G87) Supplemental update. I have two displays ( Samsung main display connected HDMI to HDMI and Acer display connected Thunderbolt to HDMI). After wake from sleep there is about a 15 second delay before the Acer turns on. The Samsung does not come on at all. Just waiting for any further updates from Apple on the issue.

Unfortunately the 10.14.6 supplemental update did not fix the monitor woes with either of the monitors (CMV, BENQ) connected via VGA->USB-C adapters (I've also tried VGA->HDMI) on either of my 2018 Mac minis. The monitors wake fine after an hour or so, but much longer or overnight and they are guaranteed not to wake without removing and re-inserting the video cable. The Mac mini just does not send the wakeup signal to the monitor.

2018 Mac Mini MacOS 10.14.6 LG 32ud59-b 4K USB-C to HDMI connection - I had the cannot wake issue too, had to re-power a couple of times to wake the monitor. Then I downloaded the LG MacOS OnScreen Control (which may have installed some drivers?) https://www.lg.com/us/support/product/lg-32UD59-B.AUS , turned off monitor power savings mode and let the Mac Mini handle power saving, and knock on wood, so for I have not had the cannot-wake-up problem.

Followup to above - the LG On Screen Control did NOT help. However I swapped out the USB-C to HDMI connection to a USB-C to DisplayPort cord https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V2ZM8DF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and that seems to have solved the sleep issue. I read on another board that it's the HDMI handshake that's preventing the sleep awakening, so go DisplayPort!

I have a 2018 Mac Mini, connected to varying monitors, both Samsung connected by HDMI. I have a similar problem, but instead of a black screen, i get a screen full of random noise after long sleep and then wakeup. It takes the system about 3 minutes to clear back up after sleep. Disconnecting and reconnecting HDMI cable will clear the issue instantly. However this is hardly a good solution.

Clearly the deep sleep that Apple puts the machine into doesn't reset the video circuitry properly. As people have pointed out, apple pretends it has a different monitor up during the sleep. This is not a monitor specific issue as it happens on both of my Samsung monitors (i use mac mini as a laptop and move between locations).

Either wake is painfully slow, or more likely a bug in the SMC firmware (system management computer). Unfortunately as of Oct 2019 there is no published SMC update for a 2018 mac mini. Yet another example of Apple being unable to fix the problems they have; their current software stack is so complex and their operation so vast, they have lost the ability to fix obvious problems.

I tried the whole Display to USB C thing. Now the monitor that is connected via Display port, won't even open. IF I take the other 4K monitor out of the mix (HDMI LG 4K) it works. But it seems a mix of Display and HDMI don't (haven't) worked.

All I am absolutely certain of, at this point, is that the ACER HD (only) monitor works every time. Which is the only thing I have known, for sure, since the start of this whole mess.

Recap: I have two 27" 4K LG monitors and one 27" ACER LED HD monitor and the 2018 Mac Mini purchased in March.

I stumbled upon this and related discussions because I have exactly the same pains but with macbook pro. With the laptop I figured out it's better to pull the plug of the whole setup (monitors and power supply are on the same extender) instead of sleeping it as usual. While not a solution it's a small improvement. I thought my macbook is faulty and planned to thoroughly erase & rebuild it but it seems the problem is deeper, so thanks to you all for saving me lots of frustration.

I am having similar problems. It is with a HDMI-connected Mac Mini 2018 and a LG monitor. There are two LG monitors connected (one through a USB-C converter and one through the HDMI port) the USB-C connected one always works fine. The HDMI one does not turn on after a 10-20 minute sleep. Swapping the monitors connections causes the other LG monitor to fail. I am not impressed with buying yet another USB-C to x adapter (though I have a USB-C to HDMI adapter at home and might bring that along). I am using MacOS Mojave 10.14.6 and am yet to upgrade to Catalina. The LG app does not support my monitors (which are pretty old).
