importing mpg4/Home Videos to iTunes can original file be put onto usb?

I would like to know what happens to home videos and similar when imported into iTunes.. must the original file remain on my iMac or can it be moved to USB/Secondary storage after imported into iTunes?

Appreciate knowing where to "look/research" to ascertain how iTunes imports of media files (not music).

Thanks

If you want to be able to access the video in iTunes (e.g. play it or sync it to a device) it will need to remain accessible on a drive. What iTunes does with it when you import it will depend upon your setting e.g. the Advanced tab in iTunes' Preferences (command-comma).
