iPad Pro 11” dropping WiFi or so it seems

New iPad Pro just loses connectivity to internet/WiFi for no obvious reasons many times a day - all other wireless devices on the same WLAN function correctly while I have an issue - what’s up with that?

iPad Pro 11-inch, Wi-Fi, iOS 12.1

I have the same issues exactly as everyone else. It got so bad that I actually had to disable wifi so the LTE could work. That was interesting in that the iPad trying to get to the wifi would prevent LTE!

Interestingly, I have an iPhone XR with no wifi issues, but an iPhone 7+ that my wife has, also has the same problem as the iPad. This seems to point to an iOS bug.

Anyways, I just decided to do the following which seems to have fixed the problem for both the iPad and 7+..

  1. Back up your iPad in iTunes.
  2. Select your iPad/Summary and select Restore iPad. This will wipe everything back to the original factory settings.
  3. Interestingly, this popped up a Software Update to iOS 12.1.1 which would not show before. Select Install
  4. On Reboot, follow the on-screen instructions and then Restore from iTunes Backup.
  5. It seems to be working perfectly now.

This was absolutely an issue prior to iOS 12.1.3 when using the USB-C to headphone dongle. It seems that under certain conditions, the iPad will look for network connectivity over USB-C regardless of what you've plugged in there. Some have said that they can produce the issue by sleep/wake cycling the iPad and I can confirm that this was the case for me, too.

Updating to iOS 12.1.3 seems to have patched this. I can wake from sleep and continue using WiFi with the Apple USB-C to headphone dongle.

I'm fairly certain that this is not a router issue or related to router properties. I can reproduce the problem at home (single band 5GHz), in various public WIFI hotspots, at my parents (single band 2.4GHz). There's somthing wrong with the device or software. People have stated that even replacement units started to show the same issues.

Apple needs to start working on it.

I reopened my case since the problem came back. They replaced my iPad Pro. On the first test with the new one, the WiFi dropped 42 minutes into the streaming meeting.

The Apple tech guy in the store was helpful with additional suggestions and an explanation of why this is so hard to investigate - basically, if it’s not a hardware issue, everyone's individual configurations and software make this hard to pinpoint. He suggested that I try to reset my iPad Pro and not restore from backup (which means that I won’t have all of my stuff), and use the basic software to see if it’s truly an iPad Pro issue and not something in my specific configuration/data. I may try this out. I forgot to ask if Apple has tried this test themselves.

So tonight I tested my iPad Pro 11” on a 1 hour webinar, but this time plugging it in. Same issue. It dropped WiFi signal after 34 minutes. Note that it’s attached to a dual band router, the 5Ghz connection. And, I was listening via Bluetooth through my AirPods.

Next time I’ll try the 2.4Ghz to see if that makes any difference.

I really think this is a software issue. Apple can probably figure it out once they invest time into it.

I did the same Tom and am also waiting to hear back.

Actions attempted up until now:

  1. restarted iPad Pro
  2. restarted router
  3. updated to latest ios (the one that just became available)
  4. tried connecting to another router/WiFi
  5. reset wireless settings in iPad Pro (which deleted them all)
  6. reset iPad Pro to factory settings and backed up from computer

Apple asked that I try to reset my iPad Pro to factory settings and back up from Cloud next if the issue persisted. It has persisted.

I have been using my second iPad Pro 11 for just over a day now. It seems to drop connectivity the same way my first one did. It freezes in multiple apps and says that the server is not responding. When I restart it,everything works fine for awhile. I restarted five times in the last 24 hours. I’ve chatted with Apple Support, and will have to go back there to explain that the second Pro 11 behaves the same as the first. I’ve never had an Apple product I didn’t love - until now.

I have this same issue as well. It has been happening frequently - every day or two - since I got the iPad less than a month ago. It’s very frustrating to have something new and encounter a problem like this. My iPad Pro 11” disconnects from WiFi after I’ve been using apps for a period of time (half hour to an hour is the typical time frame). The apps where this happens includes Safari, Facebook or Instagram to name a few. You’re using the app and all at once see a message that you can’t do something off-line. Then I have to open settings and reconnect to my WiFi. This never happens with my third generation iPad which I still have and it doesn’t happen with my iPhone 6S. I have tried all the steps in the link above including resetting the wireless settings. That lasted a day or two. It typically. This needs to be fixed! I would hate to have to return the iPad and contact my credit card to get a credit. It happened twice this evening, once when I was trying to post this!

It has only occurred when the unit is not charging - at least as far as I know. I don’t use the unit when it’s charging.

I am waiting for the Apple Store to get a replacement in; they were out. They said if the new one didn’t solve the issue it was environmental I.e. something in my house. After reading these other posts I beg to differ.

I have two other IPads, two iPhones and other apple products when the kids come over. No WiFi issues with anything except the IPad Pro.

Saying it is a WiFi issue is a little misleading. The WiFi icon at the top of Safari shows connected and WiFi in settings shows connected but nothing will work on the internet: Safari, Email, Security cameras all do not work.

So glad I found this thread! I’m having the same issue too. Bought my iPad Pro 11” on the day they debuted. I’ve noticed that if I’m on a webinar for longer than 30 minutes that my WiFi just randomly drops. Sometimes I’m using my AirPods, but sometimes I’m not. I don’t have anything plugged into the USB-C at that time.

I will try just keeping it plugged in the whole time next time to see if that fixes it.

Not feeling confident about the fact that folks who received a replacement iPad Pro are still experiencing the same issue. Apple, FIX THIS ISSUE. This is effecting my work productivity!
