keychain not syncing

Hi, I just had the battery and motherboard replaced in my MacBook Air. Since then, the keychain does not sync across my devices. All my Safari passwords and logins are still intact on my iPhone, but have disappeared from my MacBook. I have updated to the latest OS on both devices. Mail, contacts, and calendars still sync just fine -- it's only Safari that is the problem. Any solutions? Thanks.

Hello dmscholl,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that Safari passwords and login information is not syncing via iCloud Keychain on your MacBook Air. I would be happy to help point you towards a resolution.

The following support article provides some troubleshooting steps to try for this behavior:

Get help with iCloud Keychain - Apple Support

Be sure to try the steps in this section:

If iCloud Keychain is on, but Safari won't save or autofill account or credit card information

If Safari doesn't autofill your account names, passwords, or credit cards, or doesn't ask to save them to begin with, check the AutoFill and Private Browsing settings on your device.

On Mac with OS X Mavericks 10.9 or later:

  1. Choose Safari > Preferences, then click AutoFill.
  2. For account names and passwords, check that you selected "User names and passwords." For credit card information,* check that you selected "Credit cards."
  3. See if Private Browsing is turned on in Yosemite or Mavericks. Safari doesn't save account names and passwords when Private Browsing is on.

Keep us posted on the results.

Cheers!

Hi dmscholl,

Thanks for getting back to us with the additional information. The next step would be to ensure that both devices are connected to a strong Wi-Fi network and that the iOS and macOS are up-to-date:

  1. Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  2. How to update the software on your Mac - Apple Support

After that, I would like to have you check to following on both devices:

  1. On your iPhone: Go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Website & App Passwords. Confirm your login data to websites appear.
  2. On the Mac: Open Safari and click on Preferences > Passwords. Confirm AutoFill user names and passwords is selected. We'll also want to check that this screen shows it is saving new passwords entered on your Mac as well.

If your Safari login data appears, with the exception of previous login data is not synced from the iPhone to the Mac, the next step would be to turn off iCloud Keychain on all of your devices. On the iPhone you can do that by tapping on Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Keychain. Slide to turn off iCloud Keychain. On the Mac, go to System Preferences > iCloud, deselect Keychain.

Once iCloud Keychain has been turned off, turn it back on starting with the iPhone first, then the Mac. This will force your keychain items to sync across iCloud again.

Take care.

Thanks, but unfortunately that doesn't resolve my problem. My laptop had previously stored all my Safari logins and passwords just fine until my motherboard and battery were replaced. Now Safari seems to have lost all the Keychain data; however, it is all still intact on my iPhone. Is there a way to transfer the data from my iPhone back to my laptop? Seems to me that's what iCloud is supposed to do, but it's not working that way for me. I can certainly manually re-enter all my logins and passwords and Safari will auto save them, that's not the problem.

Thanks. I followed your instructions. The result was that it wiped out the handful of Safari passwords that I had recently entered. All of my old logins and passwords are still on my iPhone, but none of them were synced back to the computer. Curiously, I noticed that the toggle switch for the iCloud Keychain settings on my iPhone did not stay on. I switched it to "green" but when I check back under the phone's iCloud settings, it still indicates "Off." What now?
