2018 Mac Mini and NEC LCD2490WUXi

Got my new 2018 Mac Mini and can't get it to work properly with my NEC LCD2490WUXi (2008). Have tried a couple of USB-C to DVI cables and the problem remains. I did get it to work for about half an hour and it was great. Now it will just show the Apple symbol and the loading line, but then after ten seconds reverts to "DVI-D No signal". Have tried every monitor setting, turning the monitor on first, booting the computer first, etc. NEC tech just said "Yeah, uh, it's a problem, try a different cable". Mini works fine with an old Samsung DVI monitor. What is it about the NEC that makes it different? THANKS to anyone who can help!
