Mail Search function stopped working

MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2012), MOJAVE 10.14.1, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I have lost the search function on my mail account and nothing populates to my mailboxes -smart or regular- you can enter a search subject and the dropdown menu works but nothing happens. This happened sometime after installing High Sierra, I thought the Mojave upgrade might cure but didn't.

Is there any suggestion short of trashing this Mail account and reinstalling or is this likely due to older machine ?
