iTunes will not sync with my iPhone

I'm getting ready to go on a trip and as I was trying to run a backup of my phone to my iMac, iTunes is telling me

"To use your iPhone with iTunes, you need to install OS X 10.11.4 (or later)."

The interesting thing is that I had actually connected my iPhone to iTunes a month or so ago and had no issue. This is the first time I've seen such a message.

I've done some searching and found that I should reinstall iTunes. So I went to this page

Download iTunes 12.8 for Mac

...the page says that I need to run OSX 10.10.5 or later, which I am. Yet iTunes is giving me the bold message above.

I realize the solution would be to upgrade my machine to 10.11 but I can't, due the fact that I have some software that I'm not able to update and is apparently not compatible with 10.11.4. If it's compatible, then there's no issue and I can update to 10.11, but I'm not in a position to do that right now. Is it possible that the latest iOS updates have caused this issue?

Looking for a solution to this.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)
