mobile data toggle not working

Hi guys!

I have a huge problem with iOS12.1.

Every time I try to turn on the toggle for mobile data for a specific app, it automatically turns off and I cannot use it unless I have a WiFi connection.

This is kinda frustrating cause I have to use the maps everyday and now I don’t know what to do. This has been happening since I've updated my device and I think this might be a bug and I hope not to be the only one facing this issue.

I’ve been searching in the Apple website and some people had the same problem with iOS9 which was solved by installing the new update. If someone has any idea please comment my post.

Thank you

iPhone 7, iOS 12.1

Hello laritalpaca,

We appreciate the detailed explanation. To test, try turning off Content Restrictions entirely by tapping Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, and then switch it to off at the top. Then, restart your iPhone and test to see if you can set your mobile data as you wish and retain the settings with all restrictions turned off. If this clears the issue up, then tap Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and, if you want to continue using restrictions, you can switch it back on. If you find the issue persists, that's when I recommend that you Contact Apple Support directly to look into this further.

Have a great day.

Hello laritalpaca,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. I understand you're not able to turn on cellular data for an app.

To clarify, do you see similar behavior if you try to turn on cellular data for any other apps? Or only the one app?

If it's only one app, I recommend trying to reinstall it. Here's How to delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch :

Delete an app

  1. Lightly touch and hold the app until it jiggles.
  2. Tap User uploaded file in the upper-left corner of the app.
  3. Tap Delete. Then on an iPhone X or later, tap Done. Or on an iPhone 8 or earlier, press the Home button.

If you press too firmly on an app, you might open the app's Quick Actions menu. Tap outside of the Quick Actions list, then lightly touch and hold the app to try again.

If your iPhone supports 3D Touch, you might open the Share menu if you press the app too firmly. Tap outside of the Share menu, then lightly touch and hold the app to try again.

Once you delete the app, try to reinstall it and then test it out.

If the issue persists, a reset of your network settings may help. This clears out any saved Wi-Fi networks/passwords, cellular data settings, and APN/VPN configurations. To reset, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Then, see if this helps with your cellular data switch.

I hope the information I've provided helps.

Take care.

Hi Sterling r,

Thank you for answering. I have this problem for all my apps, except for the ones that, before the update, used to have the mobile data toggle always on.

This means that I can only use WhatsApp with mobile data and for all the other apps I am obliged to use a WiFi connection, that I don’t always have.

The main problem is that I cannot find any solutions, I even tried speaking to a technician who told me that I had to wait until the next update, in his opinion.

This also happened in iOS 9 as I can read in this community and it was solved by iOS 9.1

I have already tried to reinstall all these apps and to reset the network settings. The only solution appears to be the downgrade, but I’d like to avoid it.

Lastly, I tried to put some restrictions on the mobile data usage (ScreenTime) but every time I go back to “settings” the toggle is off. That is incredibly frustrating!

I hope Apple will soon release an update which can fix this bug.

If you have any idea please reply, you’ve been very kind.

Hi laritalpaca,

Thanks for that follow-up information. While downgrading to iOS 9.1 wouldn't be possible, there are a few other things to consider. You mentioned you tried Screen Time restrictions and that the toggle is off. Do you mean that the "Content & Privacy Restrictions" toggle at the top is switching off automatically? Or is something else happening? If you're finding that other Settings changes aren't being retained, this may point to a few other solutions.

Kind regards.

Hello Chris_g1,

Thanks for answering.

The toggle for the restrictions is okay, but as soon as I exit the cellular data settings, those toggles (like the one for Instagram) automatically turn off.

So, it’s like the time I take to tick “don’t allow” in the restriction is too long, because when I go back to the cellular data settings, the toggles that I had turned on before, are off.

It’s hard to explain, I would post a screen video but I can only post photos, I’m sorry.

Any idea? Thank you again, you’ve been very kind!

Ho Becky_s22,

Thanks for answering.

Here’s what I do:

I go to settings>mobile data and I turn on the toggles for the apps I want to use.

Then I go to settings>screentime> Content and privacy restrictions>mobile data changes and then I tick “Don’t allow”, because I think that this way, the toggles back in Mobile Data aren’t gonna automatically turn off. Then, I go back to mobile data settings and I realize they’ve already turned off.

So, “blocking” the changes for mobile data hasn’t solved anything, cause the toggles are still off.

I think it’s a bug, that’s the only explication I have found.

Thanks again, if you have some more ideas please leave a comment.
