Headphone mic not working with Mojave video screencap

I saw that someone asked "Headphone with mic not working in audio input", but there didn't seem to be a solution in the replies. Only an explanation as to WHY it didn't work (double headphone plug-in is on a single plug-in adapter since there is only one headphone jack on the laptop). My headphones also have a USB plug, which is also plugged into the laptop (guessing that's the power source). I was able to give one of my apps permission to use the mic, in the privacy settings, but the Mojave screencap video recordings won't pick up sound from the mic on my headset. It only picks up sound from my laptop speakers (which sound terrible). The output sound to my headphones works, just not the imput from the mic. Is there a way to make this microphone work? If I need to purchase a new headset with microphone, what should I be looking for? USB only?

Only the laptop microphone is listed. Not the microphone on the headphones, which is noise-cancelingand much better quality. The headset has an input & an output headphone cord, but I have an adapter that plugs them into one headphone cord since my laptop only has one headphone port. There is a USB cord also, which is always plugged in too. So, how do you use headphones and a microphone if you only have one headphone port?
