GarageBand - Low Export Volume

For years I have been struggling with low export volumes from GarageBand.

I have followed just about every thread there is on the subject: I've toggled the auto-normalise setting in the advanced preferences panel; I've used third party mastering software - I've done everything.

What really irritates me, is the disconnect between playback volume inside of GarageBand, and the 'true' volume of the file. For example, I'll play back a track and it sounds great. I'll export it with normalise unchecked, or attempt to capture it in Audio Hijack, and boom; it's distorting, peaking - you name it. BUT, whatever normalises playback volume makes an exported, bounced file too quiet when I toggle auto-normalise back on. I just want an export of what I'm hearing playback-wise and I can't get it, which is driving me insane.

Can somebody please tell me how to fix this!

having Mastering software is one thing, but knowing how to use it is another and takes some time to learn. you're going in the right direction by turning Normalize off, but this is where the art and science come in to play; you need to Master the recording to keep it from clipping/distorting, yet keep the level up.

this is typically accomplished by using compressors, limiters, EQs, alone or together. Mastering requires knowing what each song needs, it's not a "Flip this switch" setting, since each song is different.

do some web searches for "Mixing and Mastering" and do some reading (it's not the kind of thing that can be taught in a single forum post).

there are also a ton of video tutorials online that show how to properly use Compressors and Limiters to make/keep the sound punchy without distorting.

Right, but it's virtually impossible to do that in GarageBand, because the sound during in-project playback is completely different to the bounced track; I will be hearing no clipping whatsoever, and then masses of clipping when I bounce down. It will take hundreds of hours to guess the mastering values by repeatedly bouncing down the track - I just want GarageBand's 'true' volume during in-project playback!
