Hello. I have an old iMac 2009 running snow leopard. I’m trying to wipe it but command R or command option R are both not working. When holding them down it continues to desktop as if it is a normal startup. I have tested the keyboard which is fine and tried updating software. Nothing is working! Any ideas? Thanks

Try resetting NVRAM. NVRAM has a lot to do with what happens at boot time. Command+Option+P+R at boot.
When you hear the startup tone that is when you hold down Command + R. Also, what version of Mac OS is installed on the computer?

I have tried that too, but it just spits the disc out and goes to startup. When holding option it only comes up with the hd symbol.
That shortcut requires Lion or newer. Insert a compatible Mac OS X install DVD and restart with the C or Option key held down.
