Garageband problem

I have an M-Audio and also a zoom H5 and I cannot get a recording level on garageband 10.3.1. I had been using and recording with the M-audio device no worries but it stopped working. I cannot use the tuner or effects, but can hear the electric guitar. The inputs are all selected correctly and in my system preferences sounds I can see that the signal is being picked up on both units (both H5 and M-audio). This is driving me bananas and wasting so much time.

Please can someone help me?

GarageBand 10, version 10.3.1

have you recently upgraded your OS?

there are new security settings in the latest OS to prevent apps from secretly using input devices; open the Security & Privacy settings in System Prefs and make sure that GB has permission to use your interface.
