spell check suggests no spellings, ever

Ever since the update Pages no longer suggests anything when I misspell words. It knows they are misspelled and shows me a red squiggly, but regardless of what the spelling is, no matter how trivial, I am always offered "No Guesses Found".

Is there a way to fix this or do I need to use a different editor?

What are your language settings in system preferences/keyboard/text/spelling and Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar? (Use something other than "automatic).

I noticed this issue since the update to 10.14.1. Pages 7.3 no longer suggests, No Guesses Found for obvious spelling. I tried all the ideas implied above. I do notice AppleSpell process gets stuck in Activity Monitor. Whole system hangs as a result. (MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5). On my much older system in my office Pages still guesses just fine in the same document.
