iPad Pro 10.5 + 4G LTE no embedded sim

I purchased a used "unlocked" iPad Pro 10.5 + 4G LTE from very reputable online large dealer with a good reputation (Gazelle). I have numerous iPhones and iPads and use iTunes as well as iCloud. No stranger to I-devices.

Setup went fine except I cannot get the embedded Apple Sim to work on the iPad Pro 10.5. I did not install a nano sim which I didn't think was required to use the embedded sim. When I go to Settings, Cellular Data (which says Off), and tap I get nothing on the right side of the screen. Just blank screen. I think that's telling me the embedded sim is non-operational or disabled. I then went to AT&T's sim unlock website to check my IMEI against their locked IMEIs and it says my sim is unlocked. My Settings also show Carrier "Not Available" and Cellular Data Number "Unknown". I do have a Chip Serial Number (CSN) which from Apple website seems to indicate I have an Apple Sim of some sort.

Is there another setting to enable the embedded sim? Do I have to go to an Apple Store to have them put in a new embedded sim or install their own sim to get this to work? I'm stumped at this point. Help?

iPad, iOS 5.1

Thanks but it's not as easy as reading Apple Support Documents. The iPad Pro 10.5 has an embedded sim on the logic board and a nano sim slot similar to other Apple devices. The embedded sim should be useable with or without a carrier's nano sim installed. On my machine, which I purchased used from Gazelle, it is not useable nor is even viewable in Cellular Settings.

After a long day with Apple tech support there is no apparent hardware problem. It appears the embedded sim has been de-activated and cannot be turned on by Apple or on the device itself. One tech website reports that certain cellphone carriers, i.e., Verizon, who sell Apple iPad Pro machines in their shops de-activate the embedded sim somehow and leave only the nano sim slot active to prevent owners from using other carrier's networks. It appears that's the case with my machine. Apple tech support indicates the IMEI was originally assigned to Verizon. Even though the Verizon nano sim was de-activated the embedded sim was not apparently.

Verizon tech support and store techs who I contacted indicate they do not lock sims but they had no direct knowledge of the embedded sim in the iPad Pro series. They did check the IMEI of my machine and indicate it was de-activated from their network. In a total Catch-22 situation, Verizon will not discuss further without the actual account holder contacting them but they won't give me information on who that is.

So buyer beware! If you purchase a used iPad Pro with an embedded sim from a reputable seller but can't locate the original owner you might loose the capabilities of the embedded sims which are meant to provide increased customer flexibility and choice in network carriers. the nano sim slot remains useable if the machine is otherwise unlocked.

Ah, but it is that easy as shown below.

And indeed the Apple Support Document attached above states:

If you buy your iPad Pro from a carrier store, you might be limited to the carrier's cellular data network. Here's more information, depending on where you bought your iPad Pro:

United States:

  • Verizon (Verizon retail locations): The embedded Apple SIM isn't enabled. You can use a nano-SIM card from another carrier in the nano-SIM tray.
