iPad Pro screen unresponsive

My iPad Pro screen is often unresponsive to touch with screen and keyboard. Reboot does not seem to help.

Do you use a glass screen protector?

Take it off.

These new iPad Pro models with the new liquid retina display do not like ANY type of screen protector on the screen.

Touch response is poor with any type of applied screen protector.

zorkor is stating there are light leaks along the edges of the iPad Pro’ s glass screen which means the whole screen is loose in places causing varying degrees/issues with the touch screen response.

You need to look along the edges of your iPad Pro's screen for any light leakage.

His possible explanation could explain why this is only happening with only a certain limited amount iPad Pros models over three years of iPad Pro models made.

That is what zorkor is hypothesising.

This is definitely NOT normal.

How long have you had this 2018 iPad Pro?

Did you pay for extended, two-yesr AppleCare+?

Does it have any of the original 1-year AppleCare left on it?

If you can, I would just go back to your nearest, “local” Apple Store and try to get another new replacement iPad Pro.

Open the new replacement in the store and test everything before you leave until you get a device that is perfectly acceptable to you.

If that replacement has issue, ask for another until you get an iPad Pro that does not have these issues.

Not everyone is having major issues with their 2018 iPad Pro.

Nevertheless another constructive suggestion:

If you think it is related to charging try to charge with a smaller, weaker charger such as the one from the iPhone (1A type).

It ought to work basically and should relax any thermal or EMI issue.

(I just lost my pro charger and am using other ones without having a touchscreen issue. Maybe just luck, maybe not.)

Just to see if a correlation can be confirmed.

I’ve had this problem with various degrees on my iPad Pro 3 12.9 since about a month from new. So bad with last versions of iOS 12 that I was unable to use it. I was convinced however that it was a software issue as my pad has never been abused and was working fine with the software loaded when bought. When iPadOS 13 arrived, I connected a mouse and sure enough, the stuttering was evident in exactly the same way as if I was using the touchscreen. Since iPadOS 13.2, it has worked faultlessly- so much so, I am reluctant to update in fear of the issue arising again.

I'm more inclined to believe there is some app, the people who are experiencing touch issues have in common. I have no clue what that app or apps are. But I have two iPad Pro 11. Both with Apple Pencil. Neither have had ANY touch issues since the day we bought them last November. And I've finally put screen protectors on both iPad's. But after doing much research, I came to the conclusion the thickness of a screen protector for iPad Pro's was contributing to touch issues, so I put Brydge screen protectors on, which are the thinnest tempered glass protectors you can purchase at a mere .25mm thick. Even with the protectors on both devices, there are NO touch issues. Not by finger, or by Apple Pencil.

I have the Apple Pencil and every time my finger touch doesn’t work on the screen, I use the Apple Pencil And it works with no issues.

It seems to be a problem with finger touches. And it’s random and very hard to replicate.

I took a video of the touch issue which I will show to the Apple store tech as a proof cuz I am sure they will deny anything wrong with the device.

i did a full wipe and restore while traveling on business (away from my Apple Pencil). My iPad stopped exhibiting unresponsive screen.

When I returned home my pencil was completely dead and I did not experience unresponsive screen. No problems for 2 weeks.

I plugged in my pencil and charged it to 3% and IMMEDIATELY the issue started again. Issue persisted for a few days.

I have not had the issue for over a month now.

I hypothesize that if I plug my pencil in again - it will return.

BTW: It is usually not the temperature that unearthes weaknesses, it is a temperature change, because that tends to cause mechanical strain.

I know of a case where a GPU chip was destroyed just by load cycles and I did it with a PCB in just a few hours.

So the question would be: Does it tend to appear after traveling? When you move indoor? When you unpack it? When you put it on a hotter/colder surface or remove it from there?

Does it happen between phases of heavy and light use (say video vs email)?

I remember that I was typing when it hit usually, but if I watched video before I am not sure.

Here’s my hypothesis H4: Its the touchscreen controller chip!

I looked up a teardown:

https://de.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad+Pro+11-Inch+Teardown/115457

And it says an interesting detail:

2x Broadcom BCM15900B0KWFBG Touchscreen-Controller

There are two of them!

In my mind that makes a correlation with the observation that usually halve the screen is affected.

The two chips are fighting or so.

We are homing in ...

Your theories sound laudible, but this does not explain how the issue is happening across all three years of iPad Pro models.

No one here was having touch screen issues until iOS 12.

My own 2015 iPad Pro is having no hardware/touchscreen issues still running on iOS 10.3.3.

So, how do you explain this condition happening across 3-years of iPad Pro models that were all fine prior to iOS 12?

This all happened to many iPad Pro models across all the years of models AFTER iOS 12 was installed.

This appears to be an iOS 12 code issue, not hardware.
