Quicktime Buffer Overrun Detected Error with Vista

I downloaded the latest version of QT when I got my new computer two weeks ago, and it looks like everything installed correctly with QT, but I cannot playback any of my .MOV files. I get an "Buffer Overrun Detected!" error window, and it sometimes shuts down Windows completely. Any ideas?

Hello All, One system Fixed.

System was a HP Model A1700n Vista premium using on-board video (Nvidia) only 1 gig of ram. The video would break up then buffer overrun error with QT 7.1.6 when playing MOV files.

I applied the latest INF's from Asus for the A8M motherboard for Vista, the HP Vista dual channel pci IDE update and then applied the latest video driver from HP for the Model A1700N Nvidia Vista ver 7.15.10.9754.

This system has now played every MOV without any problem. Hope this can point some in the right direction.

I have both a SATA and an IDE hard drive plugged in my computer.

I tried playing a video from my Kodak camera on my C drive (SATA) and I got the buffer overrun EVERY time. Following the treads here, I copied the same file to my Extra drive (IDE) and it played perfectly.

I have no idea how to fix this, but I can confirm that on the same computer, the same files play in Quicktime from my IDE drive, but not from my SATA.

I recently updated to QT 7.2. I'm getting this same error running WinXP Pro SP2. So, this isn't just a Vista problem.

I get the error even when all I do is attempt to update the software (Help/Update) with no video/audio playing. The dialog box that says "Checking for updates" comes up but it QT crashes immediately afterwared.

iTunes seems to work just fine, just not QT. I did recent upgrade to the Visual C++ redistributable run-times to solve other problems. Perhaps Microsoft changed something in their run-time libraries.

I had this same problem, you might to try and unstall quicktime from the add/remove programs, also uninstall itunes and ipod programs, then go to your c: drive and open the program files folder and delete the quicktime folder, ipod and if you still have itunes folder delete that too, then empty your recycle bin and restart your computer. After you do this try installing quicktime again. This was very heplful to me and now my Itunes and quicktime work great.

Buffer overrun on WinXP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600, too.

Disabling hardware (DirectDraw) acceleration "fixed" the issue. IIRC, it occurred since I installed the latest nVidia ForceWare drivers, 162.18.

Needless to say that this is very annoying because HD videos are unwatchable without acceleration. I'm not sure who's to blame, Apple or nVidia, but VLC works all right with DirectX.

I have this issue also and cannot watch .MOV files from my Kodack camera. I get the buffer overrun issue using QT and also while viewing .mov file using "Windows Photo Gallery" the probram will crash. Get error message stating internet explorer must shut down.

I am running Vista, not sure what kind of hard drive. Computer is a HP Pavilion m7550n.

I AM VERY GLAD TO ANNOUNCE THAT FINALLY FOUND A PRACTICAL SOLUTION FOR THIS BUFFER OVERRUN PROBLEM, PLEASE DO AS FOLLOWS:

After downloading from the following link, you'll be able to watch your MOV extension videos (from Kodak camera) only and ONLY using WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER. In other words, download your videos from your Kodak camera into your hard drive and open them with WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER.

Download the following and then reboot. I did it and it works perfectly for me now.
I have a laptop HP dv2312us with Vista Home Premium, AMD 64x2 Turion.

Don't forget to reboot. Please post your results. Thanks.

I just read this topic and thought up of a little experiment...
I also have the same problem and have had this problem for a very long time. .mov work when streamed directly from the net, or on my laptop, but not from my pc hard drives...
So i grabbed my pocket USB HD and copy and pasted a .mov and it ran smoothly...
no runtime buffer overrun error and no choppy low frame rate.
I guess this proves if not hints to the fact that there is a possible QT and sata or ide hard drives.

Hey

I just got a new pc with Vista and have had the same problem viewing videos from my Kodak. Finally came searching for a forum with some ideas and want to thank everybody, the ones with the same problems made me feel not quite so dense...

And I tried a combination of suggestions. Tried the suggestion of playing vids from my USB drive but no joy... The "compatability mode" one was pretty bad because once I'd checked that box QuickTime Player shut me down and told me it needed "Windows 2000 or newer"!!! then wouldn't disable that option so I finally uninstalled it altogether. Then I tried using the USB drive with Realplayer and yippee!!! that worked for me. I hope it helps anyone else with the problem.

By the way I could play videos from my Kodak with XP-SP2, no problem on my old computer. So I think it may be Vista that needs some tweaking - I never had a problem with QuickTime before, with any OS.
