Itunes Store Problem

"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."

My internet is running and every other program that uses internet works fine.

I ran the diagnostic and this is what it displays:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Dell Computer Corporation Dimension 8250
iTunes 7.1.0.59

Current user is an administrator.

The only anti-virus i run is AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 Free Ed. and I closed it out in order to see if that was the problem, and it wasn't. I was fine before I upgraded to the newest iTunes, and when I try to connect to the store to download a song, it gives me this error message every time. I have cleared the DNS cache and this does not work.

Can anyone help me? Thanks.

I'm curious to know how many of you are running 2 and 3 firewalls and don't even know it. Windows XP has a firewall installed, then a lot of anti-virus software comes with firewalls, and then there are 3rd party firewalls.

You need to disable or remove all of your software firewalls (BTW Software firewalls aren't NEARLY as effective as a good old fashioned router/firewall combo.)

Oh, and then there's the fact that a lot of cable and dsl modems today come with routers/firewalls as well.

All you need is ONE firewall and you should know how to use it reasonably well.

Had the same problem of all of sudden couldn't get
into Itunes Store, today. I read some of the
comments associated with your report and tried the
following solution: I went into my Norton Internet
Security, Personal Firewall and changed the setting
from "automatic" to "Open to All".

I went into the iTunes application and had no problem
accessing the iTunes store.

I just got a notice that an iTunes 7.1.1 is
available, I wonder if it addresses this problem?

It's probably not an issue with iTunes, during the update they may have simply changed one of the ports they use in iTunes to communicate with the store, and everyone's firewalls are blocking the port.

Just installed 7.1.1 Still cannot connect to iTunes store. I agree that our firewalls are probably blocking the port, but don't think we should disable them just to access the iTunes store. Shouldn't there be something in the program updates that automatically enables access to the store, so we don't have to mess with our firewalls?

That's pretty much impossible. Most firewall/privacy filter vendors, to make their products more difficult to hack, hide their processes so that software can't detect it and open the necessary ports. That unfortunately leaves it up to the user to determine what needs to be set up in the firewall and make the appropriate changes.

You don't have to disable them, though that's a quick test to determine if the firewall is the culprit in the problem. You do, though, have to set the firewall to allow iTunes (or any other Internet-based application) to get through the firewall.

I have had the same problem for weeks and have gone back and forth with Apple... today I logged on my computer in my guest account, and opened iTunes from there for the first time... since I had never done that before, it had to install, and walla!!! I was in the store... I then decided to take a chance and log on again as administrator, went to iTunes, clicked the store, and bingo!!! Who knows why, but it worked, try that and see if it helps.
