I have a Imac G5 1.9 17' with a yellow vertical line 1px wide about two inches of the right side. My mac is 1 year 3 days old with no extended coverage 😟
I bough this mac in the US and take it back to my home country in Argentina where i actually live. This line appeared a coule of days ago.
Now, i have read this is a know problem by many users, i need to know if this trouble can get WORSE, and also if this is a manufacters defect and apple does something about it or if im alone at this (as i think i am).
If this yellow line on screen got worse for anyone let me know becouse i might want to sell this mac before that happens, or some advice on what to do that doesnt involve calling the US i would be apreciated.
I have a G5 iMac 17" (1.9 GHz w/iSight). I would like to add to the frustration my iMac display problems. The computer was purchased in November of 2005, and started showing the pretty pink and yellow lines about 2 weeks after the end of the 1-year warranty.
As of right now I have a total of 3 pink, 2 yellow, 2 blue and 1 grey vertical line from the top to the bottom of the LCD, each with the same width that others are experiencing (looks like 1-3 pixels or so).
This is aggravating, and the cost to replace the LCD's in these suckers is absolutely ridiculous. Apple: Pony up and do something.
Hey all, I had to finish my signup just to post this information i found, that may help some of you.
I too have been a victim of the dead rows of verticle pixels on the right side of my screen, and i am running a G5 2.0ghz 17" Ambient light sensor ( which is a second generation model ) According to the extended repair program page mentioned above the only affected computer were first generation. It also mentioned that you may have a computer that falls within the listed serial number range, which i do, but it is not applicable unless it's a first genration. my serial starts with W8518..... and my EMC is 2055, which clearly pegs it as a second generation and not part of the program. Right?... WRONG!!
I called apple, gave them my serial number, and EMC, and questioned them about the program being limited to First Generation only, I was told that my unit is infact covered under the repair extension....... Unfortunately I do not have an Apple store nearby, but I will take it tomorrow if I can to CompUSA and have the apple guy there look at it. ( I will post again as soon as i get verification that apple is going to fix this at thier cost ) Hopefully some of you will find this helpful, and maybe even find out you may not be stuck with the dead lines.
As of yesterday afternoon my 17" iMac G5 w/iSight (October 2005) is also suffering from this issue. Luckily I have AppleCare, but I just wanted to add my voice to this thread as yet another machine from the first weeks of this model has now failed with exactly the same issue. Obviously something wrong with the entire batch.
I have two pink vertical lines, one about a centimetre off the right hand side, and one about five centimetres in.
I purchased my iMac G5 in September 2005. Yesterday when I came home, I realized that there had been some kind of 'blip or spike' in the electricity supply (evidenced by a flashing digital clock). The iMac was in sleep mode, and whatever the 'blip or spike' was, it was too minor to cause the iMac to restart. It was after this that I noticed the first vertical line on my iMac's screen. I'm not sure whether the 'blip' or 'spike' caused it or what. Does anyone know of a 'fix'. I had bought AppleCare, but there was some confusion on Apple's part and it got cancelled.
Actually the 'vertical line' on the screen problem appears on my G-5 which does NOT have the iSight camera. The model with the iSight camera was released just after I bought my iMac.
I am not sure what EMC stands for in your message, but I believe my iMac is a SECOND generation (system information identifies it as PowerMac 8,2). I bought it just before the Intel iMacs with iSight were released. At the Apple QAF site where the range of serial numbers covered by the 3 year repair offer is (
http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/), my serial number is NOT among those eligible. Where does one find the EMC number? Since you found that your second generation iMac is covered under the repair extension, perhaps other SECOND generation (i.e. mine) iMac are covered as well.
I ordered my iMac from Apple in Sept 2005 and live in the U.S.
Otherwise, I suggest a call into Apple and make a formal complaint and get a case #. Yours isn't an isolated case. If this particular issue is reported enough times then Apple would be foolish not to extend the service program to cover all iMacs that are faulty or defective.
Asking customers to pay for expensive repairs to faulty parts just a little time out of the standard warranty is not good for their business. They need to step up and sort this out.
