iPod Nano skipping songs

Hello all, I have an ipod shuffle and just got a new Nano. I use the same Macbook and same iTunes for both the Shuffle and Nano. The Nano skips songs or starts to play a song and then stops and starts playing the next song.

I reset the Nano, that didn't work, I did a complete restore, that didn't work. I contacted tech support and sent the Nano in for testing. Before I sent them the Nano, I gathered all the songs that the nano would skip and only put those songs on the Nano.

After Apple tested, they claim there was no problem. When I got the Nano back, they wiped all the songs off the Nano. I put music back on the Nano and still having the same problem. I had also bought my wife a nano and I put the same songs on her nano and got the same problem. I put the same songs back on the Shuffle and they played just fine.

Don't know what else to do. I can't return it because its engraved. Any help please??

OK, I'm back with a progress report - and the news is good 🙂 Basically I tried doing several things so I don't know if it was one thing in particular or a combination that finally did the trick, but I'm currently listening to the 14th song on my nano without a single skip so far... After doing a search, I finally stumbled on this Apple help page and followed most of the given advice:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610

I first upgraded my laptop to DirectX 9 then checked the audio hardware acceleration settings, which were fine. Finding out whether my sound card audio drivers needed upgrading was more tricky, however, as HP's support page didn't have up-to-date info on my computer model. Basically I had to try several different driver versions before I found one more recent than the one already installed that actually worked.

Next I focused on the iTunes software itself: I wasn't too worried about external plug-ins because the only thing I'd done with it to date was re-encode music to a different bit rate. However, I suspected like many here that something in the latest release is at least partially responsible for the skipping problems, so I definitely didn't want to keep using it.

After manually uninstalling iTunes 7.2 - meaning that after removing the program I still had to do a search and delete all the related bits and pieces left behind - I installed a copy of 7.1 that I had downloaded several weeks ago but never run (older software versions are also available online). This time I transferred 20 MP3s at 160 kbps because I realized I'd need the extra space and made sure Sound Enhancer was off, although I did use Sound Check for more even volume.

To sum up, song playback on the iPod nano is now smooth and everything sounds great, so I can finally enjoy my new purchase 😀 Hopefully my experience helps everyone else out there feeling the same frustration I was...

Since the problem affects both Mac and Windows users, I would suspect that the only thing that made a difference was reverting from iTunes 7.2 to iTunes 7.1. The problem might still be in the Nano firmware, but it only manifests in combination with iTunes 7.2. I'm leaning toward that conclusion, since some of the posters who are reporting this problem with the Nano state that they can load the same songs on a different model iPod without the skipping problem. Apple really needs to solve this, not us.

I agree. People shouldn't be expected to burn their iTunes library to CDs and retransfer everything -- or erase and reset iPods to no avail -- because of a bad software version. I'm 99.9% sure it's the software. I'm not an Apple expert, but I would think they'd be apt to do something about a new software version they push users to install.

I'm also experiencing problems with my 8GB Nano skipping songs. Sometimes, when i start playing a playlist, the picture sliding in from the right stops halfway through the screen and the Nano just skips through the playlist, not playing anything at all.

I'm starting to suspect that it has problems playing variable bitrate mp3s.

After i restart my Nano, everything is fine for a while.. Until it suddenly starts again. Another restart, and all is good. And so on and so forth..

Count me in with the group betting on Nano firmware problem. I have songs, MP3 128kb encoded that play fine on iTunes 7.2 and on my 80Gb video iPod. They also played fine in both those locations when I was running iTunes 7.1.

In any situation they've never successfully played on my son's Nano. I to have tried the reset, restore, re-whatever options with no success. My son's nano is running 1.1.3.

I e-mailed apple about the problem and sent them a link to this thread. I told them it might be something wrong with the software and they should release a patch. Who knows if they even read it - or will do anything. I sent the email about a week ago so hopefully they're working on it...In the meantime, my nano still is skipping songs.

Well at least someone alerted apple to the problem. This is a legit problem and apple does need to be aware and fix it. I also believe the problem resides in the latest versions of itunes and nano device software.

Some people have had modest success doing restarts and such, but still there is no blanket fix for this. Sure hope they get is figured out soon.

I'm also having trouble with a few of my recent iTunes purchases playing on my Nano. They all play fine on my iMac, and I ended up burning them to a CD, burning them back to my puter as MP3s, then saving to my iPod. Now they play fine! However, I'd like to determine why the original files do not play?

I have tried resetting the iPod. I've restored the iPod. The iTunes and iPod software is up to date. I have an iPod Nano (4 gig), running version 1.3.1

Tracks are from The Rakes, Capture / Release

Tracks 1, 2, and 9 play on my iPod. The rest do not. All play on my iMac.

thanks!

We are having the identical issues described in this forum on my wife's silver 4 GB nano. She has barely been able to use it since we bought it b/c of this. I'm glad to have found others have similar complaints, or at least I hope this means a solution will be sorted out. Resetting etc doesn't work. Our iTunes version:

iTunes: 7.1.0.59
CD Driver 2.0.6.1
CD Driver DLL 2.0.6.2
