Need help identifying which model G4 I have

I've been trying to figure out which G4 I have but have gotten a little confused by this article:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42739

Given my model # (M8570) and given that there are only 2 firewire ports it should be a MDD. But, in the table on the link in the Processor(s) row it says its a dual processor. When I go to the System Profiler it shows 1 processor.

I don't think mines a dual. I think its a 1.25 GHz single.

Is the table wrong or am I not reading it right?

Thanks

Tom

Hi-

There is a single 1.25ghz MDD model. Described in the following:

http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G4_Mirrored_Drive_Doors2003.html

You will also find the single 1.25ghz in the far right column of the table on the document which you referenced.

G4AGP(450)Sawtooth, 2ghz PowerLogix, 1.62gbRAM, 120gb+160gb HD, ATI Radeon 9800 Mac OS X (10.4.8) Pioneer DVR-109, LaCie 160gb, 23"Cinema Display, Ratoc USB2.0, Nikon Coolscan

This is all interesting, but the MDD 2003 doesn't match the model number of my machine (per the original table I posted). In the table in the original post my model # would have been either a MDD or a FW 800 (but since there are only 2 FW ports it eliminates the FW 800).

I'm back to the original question which was is the table pointed to by the link wrong? Can it be a single MDD (not 2003)?

There are only 2 MDD Macs that has the single 1 Ghz processor, the 9145, and the M8570 (which is the FW800). There are no MDDs with a single 1.25 Ghz processor. Only dual 1.25 Ghz. Are you sure you only have 2 firewire ports?

Check your system profiler again and see what it says under Hardware>Sales Order Number. It should tell you what your machine model is.

Don't base your finding in that table. There are different models for each one of those. ie. mine is he MDD dual 1 Ghz (M8689LL/A), the same system with dual 1.25 Ghz is M8573LL/A).

Download MacTracker, it has all the specs on pretty much all the Macs that have come out to date.

This is real wierd. I downloaded Mactracker which agrees with you that the MDDs are all duals. But it also says that the FW800 1.25GHz is also a dual and I have a 1.25.

The profiler doesn't show a sales order number category at all under hardware. And checking the firewire in the profiler it only shows 400 mb/sec. I checked again and the machine has 2 usb, 2 firewire, an ethernet, a phone jack, and then the three av plugs.

So, it appears to be a single 1.25GHz with only 2 400 mb/sec FW.

I bought the macine new.

The 2003 MDD was available as a BTO/CTO with a single 1.25GHz processor. Was your unit purchased used or possibly as a Refurb? Refurbs are easy to identify as system profiler will not report a serial number.

For non-refurbs the label on the back will have the as built configuration ( CPU's, speed, optical drive, factory installed RAM, cache, video card )

Hi

To me the logic board is the most defining feature and whether it has a firewire 800 port (easy to check) and airport extreme support (less easy to check) are perhaps the most definitive things. I'm not sure where you're seeing the model number tag, but if it's just stuck on the back of the case I wouldn't put too much emphasis on it. Perhaps the computer was assembled during the transition phase from the FW800 models to the MDD 2003 models and the wrong model number was used, or it hadn't been decided yet, or they used up some remaining FW800 cases, or perhaps it's a refurb using a FW800 case and MDD logic board etc.

Hi Tom-

Rodney is right- ID the logic board and you will know what model you have. As far as cpu goes, a look under the heatsink will tell you if you have one or two processors- no doubt there.

To ID the logic board, look inside, and find the serial number on the board. Then, refer to my post at:

http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4334078#4334078

Match the serial number, and the question is solved. On that same post, I gave a link where you can also visually compare the logic boards.

Thanks, and thanks Rodney too. I'll ignore the tag on the case and dive inside. FYI I bought the machine from CDW on 5/13/04.

I'll pop it open a little later but I have a question about the reliability of the profiler. I have another post in the 10.3.9 section asking about why my MS Office apps aren't showing up in the apps section and now the sales order stuff being missing.

Where is the info that the profiler is displaying coming from? This is what's listed in the Hardware Overview:

Machine Model: Power Mac G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2
Serial Number: YM4118ECPC1

And in the Firewire section it lists only the 400 mb/sec bus.

The only 1 CPU 1.25 GHz 167 MHz bus config I've seen (like in MacTracker) would make this an MDD 2003. If that turns out to be the case, then the whole problem is the tag on the case.

I'll post back what I see inside.

I really appreciate all the help. The reason behind this search is 1) because I will probably be selling the unit soon (have a mini) and 2) we're having trouble getting a Sonnet wireless card to work. In both cases having an accurate description helps.

Since I couldn't tell a heat sink from an Airport Card, I could use some help deciphering. I got numbers off of 2 boards. The big one that covers most of the side of the machine and a smaller one under that I think is the cpu.

The big one is:

J54110WRPG8T 630T4659/630-4655

And the smaller one is:

J54101QWPHEB 630T4679/630-4678 CN MPU 1.25 GHz

I'm assuming its the large one your post refers to. Unless I'm missing something the "PG8" we're looking for but your list goes no higher than PG7.

Does any of this ring a bell?

Tom
