Need help identifying which model G4 I have

I've been trying to figure out which G4 I have but have gotten a little confused by this article:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42739

Given my model # (M8570) and given that there are only 2 firewire ports it should be a MDD. But, in the table on the link in the Processor(s) row it says its a dual processor. When I go to the System Profiler it shows 1 processor.

I don't think mines a dual. I think its a 1.25 GHz single.

Is the table wrong or am I not reading it right?

Thanks

Tom

Let me describe the board best I can.

If I orient the board so that the CPU (I assume thats the stuff under the large metal slotted cube):

A ribbon connector comes in from the top left, next is the CPU, followed by 4 memory slots. Then comes 5 slots, the first I think is called an ATA but whatever it the card my monitor is connected to). The other 4 slots are PCI.

On the lower half of the board starting from the left is a ribbon connector and, what I assume, is the power connector. There's a pretty wide space with small components next and then on the lower right is a card a couple inches square.

Where would the AirPort card be?

Thanks for hanging in there.

Hi Tom-

Look at page 3 of the following document to help you with the Airport Card location:

Also, the "large metal slotted cube" is the heatsink, which, yes, resides on top of your CPU.

The two pin fan connectors that your looking for look something like one of the ends of the following:

We may be real close...

I do not have an AirPort card (although I found the slot for it) in this machine. There is a single metal-looking wire parked on the framing next to where the card would be installed. I'm assuming that's the antenna connector. To make sure I'm looking in the right place, if I look to the point on the logic board where the card would slide into and then look to the left and right of that slot there are in fact connectors. The one on the right is empty and there are two pins sticking out. The one on the left does have a black and red wire connector hooked to it.

If these are the two connectors you refer to in your other article it must mean Rev C. And I'm assuming that may mean this is an MDD 2003.

While I have your attention, the AirPort card brings up a question. Is this card the wireless card? When we were configuring the machine originally I chose not to have wireless installed (something I regret right now since I'm trying to get wireless installed). The solution I've been trying is a Sonnet PCI card but we're having trouble getting it to work.

If this slot is for a wireless card are they still available?

Thanks again for all your help.

BTW I did get a note back from Ian (MacTracker) who claims that the model # being used for the MDD 2003 is wrong. His comment is that the number being used is part of an order number. This could mean a couple things. 1) as you suggested, the model # on the outside of the machine does not match what was actually installed (which would make sense if this were a 2003) or 2) the S/N on MacTracker is wrong.

Given when I bought the machine (5/04) and what I've learned here I suspect this computer is an MDD 2003 even though the model # indicates it's either an MDD or a FW 800.

One more round and I think my question will have been answered.

Hi-

So, you have fan connectors on each side (one used, one bare). And with the serial of the logic board, and taking all other facts together, I think that you are the proud owner of a 1.25 ghz MDD 2003 (rev.C).

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg4/stats/powermac_g4_1.25mdd.html

The connector that you described is the antenna connector for the Airport card.
The cards are very hard to find. Used and refurbished can be found with some looking. The best source for help with Mac wireless needs is:

The only problem with Airport, is it is 802.11b, which is the slowest. A good, compatible 802.11g PCI card will give much better results, especially with a DSL connection.

Thank you so very much for all the help. A good thread!

And thanks for steering me away from trying to find an Airport card. Don't want "b" when I have a "g" WAP.

I sent an email to the vendor you suggested. Sonnet and I are still working through some diagnostics to see why the PCI card they have isn't working on this machine. It certainly could be a faulty card and their very willing to replace it. Before that they are retesting to make sure it works on a G4 with 10.3.9.

My backup plan is to replace the G4 with a Mac Mini I bought recently to connect to my TV (with eyeTV) but that's been pretty disappointing.

Thanks again

Tom
