grave accents <è> in Mac OS X 10.4.9

I use a UK keyboard & find that alt + ` then type e works for me, don't know if that keystroke will work for you. Have you tried it?

Try not using the alt key. Also, my ` key is the one to the left of Z, try alt + that key then type e.

Grasping at straws as I don't use european keyboards, to be honest.

Do all these characters, accent etc not show up in your Character palette?

Do you a small flag on your finder window menu (on mine just to the left of the time and date)?

Click on it and Character Palette is one of the options.

If Character Palette not there when click flag, click Open International then go to Input Menu & tick Character Palette.

If no flag in top right of screen go to System Preferences>International>Input Menu.
Tick Box next to 'Character Palette'.
Make sure 'Show Input Menu in menu bar' is ticked.

Edit: Don't know if there is such a word. What's that dictionary new words get added to each year? Suggest it to them. Somersetarians has a nice ring to it.

You need to go to system preferences/international/input menu and tell us what keyboard layouts you have the boxes checked for. Also you need to make sure the box for "show input menu in finder" is checked so you can see which layout is active via the "flag" menu at the top right. Most likely this has changed from what you are used to, so the normal keys don't work. It is most unlikely that there is a bug causing your problem.

The top two pictures here show where the grave deadkey is located in the two possible Spanish layouts. In the US layout, the grave deadkey is at Option + top leftmost key.

when I press the key at the right of the "p" key,(the
grave accent <è>) nothing happens, even if I use the
Keyboard viewer to type instead, the same thing
happens.

The key to the right of p does not produce è. To do that you need to hit that key followed by the "e" key. When you do that, do you just get e?

Does it by chance work correctly in TextEdit with the font Lucida Grande?

Another thing to check is system prefs/speech and system prefs/universal access: Make sure that somehow that key has not been selected for some special function like speech recognition.
