grave accents <è> in Mac OS X 10.4.9

Since my last update on Mac OS X 10.4.9, I cannot find the way of writing with grave accents <è> as I usually did with my spanish keyboard. My language is Catalan and these accents are used really frequently.

Anyone knows if it's some configuration stuff or is it a bug of the 10.4.9?

Thanks in advance,

guillem

You need to go to system preferences/international/input menu and tell us what keyboard layouts you have the boxes checked for. Also you need to make sure the box for "show input menu in finder" is checked so you can see which layout is active via the "flag" menu at the top right. Most likely this has changed from what you are used to, so the normal keys don't work. It is most unlikely that there is a bug causing your problem.

The top two pictures here show where the grave deadkey is located in the two possible Spanish layouts. In the US layout, the grave deadkey is at Option + top leftmost key.

I finally found this Character Palette and my keyboard corresponds to the Mac Spanish ISO. However when I press the key at the right of the "p" key,(the grave accent <è>) nothing happens, even if I use the Keyboard viewer to type instead, the same thing happens. But if I press Shift+"this key" the "^" character shows up (and this works well). So I don't know what the **** happens with this key. The rest of the keyboard seems to work perfect, so that's why I point at the possibility of being a bug...

Thanks for your help anyway Tom,

The key to the right of p does not produce è. To do that you need to hit that key followed by the "e" key. When you do that, do you just get e?

Does it by chance work correctly in TextEdit with the font Lucida Grande?

Another thing to check is system prefs/speech and system prefs/universal access: Make sure that somehow that key has not been selected for some special function like speech recognition.

Of course I know how to use the accent, I know you have to press first the key and afterwards the "e" to get a è. I am posting here because it just doesn't work with this accent, by the other hand, for example, the "´" accent works well, an i've tried in the TextEdit, in Firefox, in MS Word, ... and the same thing happens with all of them.

And I haven't been messing with the speech thing...and I've taken a look and seems everything is ok...

It's quite strange.

Thanks for your time Tom,
