.pkg files

I wanted to download a program (neooffice) from the net and to install it on my drive. After succsesful downloading, the downloaded .dmg-file changed to a .pkg-file for installation and others. But if I try to open the .pkg-file I'm asked to choose a program for opening the file.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Might be an idea, have to admit have never had to trash that one having never had this problem. What, exactly, does launchservices do (apart from running installers)? Always have wondered.

It determines what app opens which kind of files, and keeps track of "first time opening this app" message.

It works... 🙂

The problem was, that I changed the system by reorganization the system- and utilities-folders, so that the system couldn't find the right programs to run the .pkg-files. I reinstalled the Mac OS X system and everything is ok.

I saw the problem you had and it seems that I am experiencing the exact same thing. Unfortunately I'm away from my home right now and don't have access to the Reboot disk. Could you tell me what folders you had changed around, maybe I can solve my problem manually

I'm sorry, but I cann't tell you anything about this. I just used the mac os x install discs, so that it is difficult to show you the changes. There are too many files involved. The most improtant folders are the program- (with the service-folder) and the system-folder.
