Image capture scan button greyed out

I'm switching from PC to Mac. I connected my Epson scanner. When I push the scan button, ImageCapture opens up, but the scan button is greyed out, and I can neither scan nor save the image. I visited the Epson website and downloaded the Twain driver recommended for Mac. But my machine won't extract or install the driver. So I'm stuck. I'd greatly appreciate any help with making my scanner work with Macbook.

I've gone all over the web. The epson files come in the form of unopenable .sea files. I have a request into Epson for technical support. I'll let you know what I find out. I must say, though, that the Mac commercials run in the US are a bit misleading. In the 5 months of owning an Apple product, I've yet to realize increased ease of use or fewer hassles. If this continues, I will probably give this Machine to my wife for playing Sudoko on line. I'm going to continue to try, however. Good night and thanks. I hope to get this fixed.

In my first post I suggested that you may not need to install a driver at all, as the Mac comes loaded with plenty anyway.
In my last post, I suggested how to hook up the printer scanner, which implies relying on the Mac to install its own drivers.
I think you are complicating things getting sidetracked with this .sea file.

Hi, I was having the exact same problem (I think--the image would load in the window, but I couldn't save it because the button was grayed out) and was searching around for an answer, including here, when I unwittingly stumbled upon the solution (at least in my case--I almost hope you're having a different problem, because then you might not feel as dumb as I did.)

You have to SELECT the area you want to scan by clicking and dragging before you can scan it.

Eureka!

I got it. Thanks a million. To recap, in addition to the excellent tips, I downloaded the drivers from Epson, renamed them from *.sea files to *.app files per the Epson support people, and then I had some additional installing to do apparently. It works!

Now I have a questions born of simply inability to understand the Mac way of doing things. I frequently need to scan black and white images, and make minor changes. With PC, I'd used Paint to alter bitmap images. Mac has neither Paint nor bitmaps. What would I use in Mac instead of bitmap images and paint?
