"disc burner in use by another program"

i have been having this problem for a few weeks now and the only thing that helps is rebooting...however I can only burn a couple of cd's before it starts happening all over again.

I went two years with no problems and it just started happening - i have added no new burning programs outside of itunes (i do have toast and discblaze but they have been on there for a while and never caused problems before).

any help appreciated

I am able to burn a disk from iTunes provided that I click Burn Disc before I insert a CD into the MacBook (the iTunes help file says to insert a CD first, and then click Burn.) When I do this iTunes tells me to insert a disk and all proceeds well - except on one occasion I wasn't able to eject the CD from iTunes after burning it and had to use the disk utility instead. I did not have to eject my WD Combo external hard drive for this to work.

I had these issues as well - popped up out of nowhere. followed these instructions, as I have a shared WD 2TB external HD, worked for me:

The common problem with this error recently is the new Western Digital MyBook drives. If you've added one then go to HD/Library/LaunchDaemons/ and delete the com.WD...Plist file that's there

Reboot machine, problem solved.

yes, this situation where one has to be CUED to insert the disc in order to burn seems to exist on my system only since I installed Leopard. it's also been the case in other disc-burning programs, such as iDVD....(actually, Leopard made my disc-burning capacity in iDVD 5 obsolete and I got stuck buying the whole new iLife series in order to meet a deadline...only to run across the problem described in this thread with iTunes, all over again). annoying and counter-intuitive but at least my CD is burned.
