My MacBookPro does not recognize CD-R any more - it pushes them out after 30 seconds. CD-RW and DVD is fine.
I have the MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857 drive.
Does anyone else have such problems? I assume it could have something to do with one of the latest security updates because I didn't change something else on my system in the last weeks.
I'm having the same problem. I can read
NON-BLANK CD-R's, and CD's and DVDs. My drive just rejects the BLANK CD-R's AFTER I updated the Drive's Firmware. I'd like to revert back, if possible. Can anyone please help?!?!
if that doesn't work and you want to revert back to before doing the firmware update you would need to do an archive and install preserving user and network settings. You won't lose any of your information but it will take the operating system back to the original configuration. then you can do the updates you want.
heres the article explaining how to do an archive and install:

I am not sure that wil help but I have the same problem except i noticed that only one brand and model of the cd-r i have keeps being rejected. It the Memorex black cd-r. Other memorex cd-r as well as other brands work normally. DVDs also work. I wonder if it is not just a compatibility issue with some types of cd-r (although this shouldn't happen. but you never know, so many companies make cheap cds now).
anyway, if anyone has a solution, I would be happy to hear about it.
Same problem, same symptoms, MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857D7 drive, revision KCVB. Problem did appear after applying the infamous Superdrive 2.1 update. Superdrive can read all non virgin disks (CD, DVD) but doesn't recognize blank CD-R.
I described everything on an other thread
Called Applecare today and the competent person walked me through a series of operations for one hour finally concluding it is a hardware problem. My MacBook Pro is going back for repair.
It's weird that it's a hardware problem because i've had my macbook pro for over a year now and only today has it started rejecting dvd-r discs. Even the Verbatim dvd-r that I've used in so many occassions aren't being recognized. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the recent mbp firmware update. A solution would be greately appreciated.
I have had my MBP for just over a week now and it will not recognize the black memorex cd-r (though they continue to work just fine in my Powerbook)... i have had no problems playing CDs and DVDs and have found that TDK cd-r is recognized just fine. Have not tried any cd-rw. I spoke with telephone support two days in a row and got a number of opinions. they said that it could be the optical drive, could be software issues and could be hardware issues.
a little vague i think.
but i also have had other problems with programs quitting unexpectedly as well as front row not working properly.
I am having the same problem. It started within the last couple of days. It is the same drive that everyone has mentioned. I can burn to a DVD-R, but it won't read any blank CD-R. I have searched many help websites and I cannot find a fix for it.
My MBP is having the same problem, although i have only tried it with memorex black cd-r's (my favorite). Luckily it is only a few weeks old, I will be taking it to an apple store soon to get fixed.
Same here. I doubt it's hardware, since, for most of us, this just started popping up. So unless the software upgrades led to a hardware fault, I'm guessing this is rooted in some variation on software upgrades we've done.
It's a very real and annoying problem for me, as I do a lot of audio and video work and I use pre-produced CDs, which I am no longer able to access.
PRAM reset did nothing for me, by the way. Have also fixed permissions. No help.
Of course, as is typical, I feel like Apple isn't listening here....Too busy in the cell phone business 😟
I don't know if it was a patch, or my first use of iDVD that disabled the DVD-R capabilities of my macbook. I had burned a dozen or so, DVD-R for backups and such.
Now DVD-R is only recognized and will only work with iDVD. Can't seem to access it any other way. Using my login that is.
When I login as an administrative account that has never used iDVD, inserting DVD-R media pops up the good old finder window with a place to burn, and burns just fine. Only problem is I have to go to the terminal to re-set permissions when I want to back up all my "stuff" in the ~/ of my normally logged in self.
Try setting up and logging in a brand new admin account and see if it will recognize the DVD-R or whatever media you put in the drive. Oh, and good luck! I remember back when trying to get something done on a computer required luck. I thought I had gotten away from that.
