My MacBookPro does not recognize CD-R any more - it pushes them out after 30 seconds. CD-RW and DVD is fine.
I have the MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857 drive.
Does anyone else have such problems? I assume it could have something to do with one of the latest security updates because I didn't change something else on my system in the last weeks.
I was having the same problem with my 1 week old MacBook Pro, I could not burn discs. So I called Support and all the guy could tell me was that whatever brand I bought was not compatible and I should try a different brand!
To which I was soooo annoyed... I asked him how much money I was supposed to spend on non-compatible useless discs till I found one that worked!
Right now I am mourning the loss of my Powerbook (it hit the tile floor and while it is fully functional, but relegated to "desktop" status). Every time I turn on the computer I in the support pages trying to find the solution to another problem I have found!
But, at least for now I have found one brand of CD's that work.... MAXELL CD-RW's. I was also told Sony discs are a good bet (for those of us that live in the "sticks" they may be hard to find... office depot does not sell them). Now I just have to hope that nobody gives me a Memorex CD with any data on it or it won't read in my mac!
Good Luck to everyone else trying to find a solution to this problem!
I was troubled by the same problem on not one but three Macs so I was sure that there was a problem with a software update or something like that. Called AppleCare, all they could come up with was bringing the computers in for repair. I'm currently in Mexico, the closest Apple store is 4 hours away, and any repair takes several months. Anyway, I bought a 60 peso (6 buck) DVD lens cleaner at Office Max and this fixed the problem on all of my Macs. Maybe a software update made the Superdrives more (or less) sensitive, don't know why the problem appeared on three Macs at the same time, but the problem was fixed quickly and easily. I highly recommend this route to anyone before something more drastic.
i have the issue but with dvd-r, everything else works fine. i dont have the time or transportation to get over a mac store but i am going to get my hd upgraded by a certified place and have them check out my cd/dvd drive and hopefully get it fix/replaced. but that wont be until may

Hi everyone. I had the exact same problems. First my mac book pro would not recognize ANY blank Cd-r even though it worked fine on everything else. Then, a couple of times, it recognized them but once I tried to burn something it would just say something like "laser not fast enough for disk type" or something like that. I tried re-setting the pram, using the computer in safe mode, 5 different brands of disks, etc. Then by a freak of nature I discovered that if the battery ran completely dead causing the system to shut down, it fixed my problem. to be sure, later when the problem started again, I let the same thing happen, and it DID work. It's worth a try I say. Let me know if this works for you.
Same Here.....! I write all the time to the same spool of DVD+R's I have, But NOW after the latest Security Update, the system does not cooperate. Used to be simple drag files in and burn, Done! After the UpDate the discs do not Always appear on the Desktop, and when they do I get Burn errors after it just sits there waiting for a few minutes.
Error Reads ( Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred / Error code 0x8002006E ) This is very frustrating to say the least. I have read and done the Reboot P-RAM activity with limited success. The Disc Utility solution did not work for me either. I was however, able to get Toast 8 to burn a few DVD's after setting up the information and sliding the Disc in at the time it requests it and starts looking immediately. So With That I know my SuperDrive is Functional and that it is obviously a software error caused by the Security Update 2008-002 (Universal) - I SURE HOPE THEY SEND OUT A PATCH SOON!!!
Apple! figure it out! This is super anoying. My 4.5 year old Powerbook G4 1Gz can read these disks and my almost brand new refurbished MacBookPro makes me look lame in front of my customers. It's like Apple doesn't like things that are black. The black "imation" disks that have already been burnt won't load onto my MacBookPro. I have to use my PowerBook G4 1Gz to read a simple data disk that has been burnt on a MacBook. (Hold on, I have to run to my PowerBook G4 to retrieve data from my client's disk) After reading this forum, it's unbelievable that this a problem and has not been resolved. And yes I'll call tech support in the AM. I had to vent somewhere tonight and hopefully Apple reads this.
I have the same problem here. Blank CD-R not recognised, you can hear the drive making an attempt at it but it just chucks it out after about 30 seconds. Blank DVDs are fine as are CDs that are already written. I have no idea when the problem started because I don't burn that many CDs. I just went to burn myself a copy of the Firmware Restoration CD and found that I couldn't.
This is on a MacBook Pro 2.33, with many different brands of CD and both under Leopard and XP (Bootcamp). I think it's a flaky drive.
I updated my Mac OS X and my I-tunes and it seems to burn CDs fine now, like it won't spit them out which is great, BUT in the middle of burning it says "DISC Failed-Medieum Write Error"
