New York Times pages won't load

New York Times pages fail to load in Safari or Firefox. This behavior has been ongoing for several days and is annoying.

I wonder if this is a result of the last security update? It seems to have appeared since I installed it from Software Update.

Hi,

Thanks for the answers, I don't know what you have tried thus far if this is
redundant forgive me.

Perhaps going to your Gateway to check your settings would prove fruitful, there have been times when a user can not access a site and reconfiguring the settings helps

Also you may want to check your settings w/ Tesserax post here

Do you have the Debug Menu enabled in Safari? if not that may help,
With Safari quit, enter the command into a terminal window, click return
enter admin password.

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

Clearing the Routers cache may help as well.

In a Terminal window, copy & paste this command below..

lookupd -flushcache

Good luck, please keep us posted.

I've changed no preferences in either Safari or Firefox - both are set to accept cookies and Java is enabled.

I've tried deleting cookies and clearing the cache in both browsers, then restarting them. I can usually get the home page, but when I start clicking on links, the pages fail to load.

I get this error message in Safari:

Safari can’t open the page “ http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/07/health/07buse.html?ref=science”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005)

The URL above opened just fine for me.
The issue is a "lost network connection" (the URL failed to load). Command-R (refresh/reload) will usually open the page.
It has nothing at all to do with the NYT Site and you could have gotten that message from any Web page.
The usually fix is to contact your ISP and ask them to suggest some DNS server values that you would enter in your Network System Preferences.

Thanks for the advice, but pages still fail to load.

I did as you suggested and added the 2 DNS servers recommended by my ISP (AT&T Bellsouth) in my AirPort System Preferences.

In Safari, the home page and several links loaded. But when I tried to log in to my Times Select account, I got the same error message from earlier. Attempts to load other pages then failed.

In Firefox, after I added the DNS server addresses, a few pages loaded, then stopped - the pages time out with no error message, just a blank browser.

I'm reposting this in the hope that some of the great Apple gurus who peruse the discussions have a solution.

It is so annoying to have to constantly clear a browser's cache (and cookies sometimes) in order to load pages of the NYTimes.

I, too, had been successfully reading the paper online for years without a single problem.

But now, I have a problem! And it's really getting under my skin.

Hi,

Which mac listed in your specs does this affect?

Which router do you use?

Have you tried trashing the cache folders instead of just emptying the cache?

Go to the ~Library/Caches folder, find Safari cache & firefox cache & move both to the trash.

Does that help any?

When this happens, have you checked your connection in System preferences/Network/Show: Airport or Ethernet, is the light yellow or green?

Yes, and I also tried clearing the Java caches.

Does that help any?

No.

Do you have anything in the following system preferences section?

System Preferences > Network
Click on "Airport" and click "Configure"
Click on the Proxies tab

Is anything entered for the proxy settings in that section? If so and if you didn't enter that information due to a need for proxies, clear/delete any proxy settings, click "Apply Now," and close System Preferences. You will probably need to quit and relaunch Safari and may also need to restart the Mac to see the changes take effect.

hey there this si a simple suggestion
since what i understood here is that you have the same problem with different web browsers on the mac os x side but it works fine when you try them from a virtual OS which seems to be an issue with the network preferences why don't you just trash out the system configuration folder and then restart your computer and then create a new location then test it out

or maybe you will need to try a direct connection from your modem to your mac to see if it is an issue with the router's end

or also you could try checking to see if the issue persist on a different mac

I pulled the System Configuration folder but when I rebooted and tried to set up Airport anew, none of my settings would hold.

So:

I grabbed the installation CDs and did an Archive and Install, which put OS X back to 10.4.5

While I haven't applied the 10.5.1 Combo Updater yet, I can tell you that the situation has not changed. If it does after applying the updater, I'll post here.

That said...

I also pulled out my old TiBook as you suggested and found that NYTimes pages fail to load there as well.

So my ISP/Network is again looking like the culprit. Now if only I knew what setting to change....

Earlier you wrote, "I did as you suggested and added the 2 DNS servers recommended by my ISP (AT&T Bellsouth) in my AirPort System Preferences."

Have you tried alternate DNS addresses? It's possible the DNS addresses supplied by your ISP are flaky. This has been an on-again, off-again problem for me with my ISP.

If you haven't tried other DNS addresses yet, try either of these popular options:

Verizon's DNS addresses:

4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2

OpenDNS addresses:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Also, you mention you entered the DNS addresses in your System Preferences (Network/Airport). That should work, but be aware that if you have a router that all of the computers in your house use to connect, you can enter DNS addresses in that router's configuration instead. (And you might try changing whether the router has these set up, or your computers' System Preferences, to see whether one or the other makes a difference. If you do that, make sure to reboot everything - computers and router - between tests.)

Rachel, thanks for your suggestions. I did try OpenDNS back when I used the AT&T DNS settings and they proved unsuccessful... but the OpenDNS results were the same so I didn't post that info.

However, you got me to digging around on the Linksys site and I believe I found the answer.

In my router settings, the MTU setting was disabled. Once I enabled it (set at 1492), I went back and began loading page after page after page - both in Safari and Firefox.

Whew....
