My boyfriend purchased the iPhone. He got home, plugged it into the Mac laptop. Itunes came right up. He was just going to transfer his number from his existing at&t phone to the iphone, when, bang. It gave the error message that is the subject of the thread. Meanwhile, his friends were calling him from their new iphones, already activated.

He called the iphone support people, got transfered to a different number, it was automated and couldn't help because he got the iphone from the store so he had no order number. Finally, he got through to someone.

Here's the scoop. If you are a loyal, existing cingular/at&t customer, it will take you at least 12 hours (maybe 24??) to get your iphone activated.

But if you are switching to at&t? Well, they have staff specially trained to help you. Their system is quick to respond.

Nope, that's not true. No one is getting preferential treatment here. The truth of the matter is what everyone here should have been expecting. When does a game/gadget launch that is highly sought after that doesn't have problems when it comes to connecting to the internet? Answer: NONE!

Every MMORPG that comes out has this same problem on launch day. Everyone is trying to activate their account and get on to their servers at the same time. It overloads them and everything slows to a crawl. I expected this with the iPhone so I'm not disappointed. But to claim that ATT is making some people wait while others get instant activation is a flat out lie and I'm proof of that. I'm waiting on activation for my transfer just as everyone else.

Phone service is scheduled to be disconnected on your current phone at or after 8:06 PM EDT on June 30. Please check your email and be prepared to reconnect and activate your iPhone before that time. Please call 877-800-3701 if you'd like to make other arrangements.

You will receive an email to **@mac.com as soon as your iPhone is ready to be activated. After you activate your iPhone and before your phone number is transferred from your current provider you will continue to receive calls on your current phone. Your iPhone will be able to make outgoing calls but will not receive calls until the transfer is complete.

Please refer to your Activation ID when calling.

I hope i do not have to call AT&T, and it just goes through.

meh.

I called again... The rep was able to activate my iPhone over the phone (I called from my existing cell). I needed to power off and then power on the iPhone for it to recognize the activation signal. I've since received an email that the port is in process.

Yes, they had issues...but, hey, this is the biggest launch in history so glitches are to be expected. Syncing now. 🙂

I've received the email saying "AT&T is now processing your activation" at 7:25pm ET (it is 9:00pm already).

My old phone was disconnected a couple of minutes after I received the email. When I turn the phone on, it reads "Inactive SmartChip".

That means I don't have phone now. I can't call activation assistance because I don't have a land line.
